Harry Huggins Obituary

CDR Harry L. Huggins DURHAM, NC - CDR Harry L. Huggins, 90, of Durham N.C, passed peacefully in his sleep on July 15, 2021 with his wife of 63 years, Dr. Elizabeth A. Huggins, by his side. Harry was born in Chester SC to the late Samuel Leard Huggins and Margaret Nelson Beard Huggins. He was one of five brothers, who preceded him in death - all fellow veterans, Samuel L. Huggins, Jr., William Davis Huggins, Nelson Huggins, who was killed in action in 1945 in the Europe theatre of operations, and his younger brother, Edward H. Huggins. He was also preceded in death by Renee Huggins (wife of Samuel L. Huggins, Jr.) and by his son-in-law, Thomas J. Geyer. Harry graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia, SC and then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was one of the four Radar Specialists trained to operate a newly developed radar system. He was immediately deployed to the Korean Theater of Operations aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Boxer. After completing his enlisted service, he was awarded an NROTC scholarship to the University of South Carolina, where he graduated with honors from the school of Engineering. Subsequently He was commissioned as an officer in the US Navy. During his career as an officer in the Submarine Service, he was assigned many billets and but was most proud of being the Commanding Officer of his beloved USS Sea Poacher. After retirement from the US Navy, he earned a Master's degree and continued to work in engineering primarily in Charleston, SC, where he and Elizabeth enjoyed living for many years. Harry was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. His family was his pride and joy. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Radcliff (All) Huggins; his son, Harry L. Huggins, Jr., three daughters, Margaret Brockinton (Langdon), Anne Geyer and Elizabeth Romach (Andy); 5 granddaughters, Elizabeth Geyer, Renee Geyer, Molly Bockinton, Emma Brockinton, Nicole Romach; sisters-in- law, Eleanor Huggins, Lucille Huggins and 10 nieces and nephews and their children. Elizabeth I just found Harry's obit and was so sorry to hear of your loss. 63 years is a long time to have to say good bye to your love. I think about you often and will always treasure you being such a marvelous lady and friend.
