Harry Carter was indeed a great man. He was a man of God and integrity, and left a permanent, positive mark on my life. My father, Rev. James Kelly, loved Harry Carter who encouraged and tirelessly supported my dad in his ministry and Christian outreach. My mother and I were devastated when my father was killed and we were hospitalized; Harry and Mrs. Alice's unselfish acts of kindness and wisdom pulled us through these tough times.
When Harry promised something, he delivered. He promised to take me fishing one cold day in December, and though he had a thousand other things to do, and preparing the boat was a pain, the lake was choppy, it was freezing, etc., there were a thousand reasons to get out of it, he took me. That one act has remained with me to this day; when I make a promise, I keep it.
He also had a remarkable sense of humor and an ability to get things off of center and moving. Bonneau Baptist was attempting to decide what color the new carpet should be. The typical never-ending, carpet-purchase, Baptist-business-meeting marathon was going on and on and on, with everyone presenting his argument for the color and telling all the others why their choice was superior; the colors had been narrowed down to the complete visible spectrum. It appeared an impasse had been reached, when he said, "Why don't we let everyone pick a 1 foot square piece of his color, and we can sew them together and have a checkerboard carpet?" After the laughter had subsided and everyone realized how truly insignificant carpet color is compared with winning souls for Christ and worship, a consensus was shortly reached. Ironically, it was the same color that Mr. Carter had initially suggested.
Harry stood tall, because he bent his knee to God and his faith was evident by his works.
I am envious that Harry, Mrs. Alice and my dad are once again together, but also know that one day I will be with them.
