Harry Carter Obituary

CARTER, JR., Harry Harry L. Carter, Jr., 89, of Bonneau Beach, SC, widower of Alice Ilderton Carter, died March 21, 2007. Mr. Carter was born January 14, 1918, in Augusta, GA. He was the son of Harry L. and Alice Ruffin Carter. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007, at 1 p.m., at Russell Funeral Chapel in Moncks Corner, SC. Burial will follow at Bonneau Baptist Church Cemetery. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Formerly of Charleston Heights, SC, he was employed by Sires Lumber Company, Berlin G. Myers Lumber Company, W.C. Wilbur Company of Charleston Heights, and ultimately owned the Harry Carter Company. His company developed Jenkins Terrace, Wildwood, Brentwood and Oak Ridge Estates subdivisions. Mr. Carter was well known in the business and political circles of North Charleston. In 1942, at the age of 24, he was appointed by the Governor to serve on the St. Philip's and St. Michael's Public Service Commission and was later elected chairman. He served as president of the St. Philip's and St. Michael's Civitan Club. Mr. Carter was active in the North Charleston Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he received the "Young Man of the Year" award in 1949. This award was for his forethought, initiative, and leadership in effecting, through the Public Service Commission, such municipal improvements as the first street lighting on Rivers Avenue, house numbering and street markers, and for obtaining the first lighted softball field. Mr. Carter was a visionary, and in 1961 he served as president of the North Charleston Incorporation Association in one of the earlier attempts to incorporate the city. He was called "a power to be reckoned with." He also started a weekly newspaper called the North Charleston Banner and was a co-founder of the Baptist College. He was a long-time member of Charleston Heights Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and R.A. leader before moving to his lake home at Bonneau Beach, SC, in 1965. He is currently a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Bethera, SC. Mr. Carter loved the Lord. His great faith, unselfish giving, dedication and love for children led to the establishment of Bonneau Christian Academy in 1980. He served as Administrator until the school closed in 2001 with grades K-4 through 12. Survivors include four sons, Robert L. Carter of Summerville, SC, Roger R. Carter (Joan) of North Charleston, SC, Richard L. Carter (Vickie) of Macon, GA, Trey Carter (April) of Bonneau Beach, SC, and one daughter Carol Jean Karcher (Bruce) of North Charleston, SC; 13 grandchildren, Dale Carter, Laina French (Joe), Victor Karcher (Theresa), Christine Cox (David), Jason Carter (Nicki), Micah Carter (Rachel), Kelley Carter, Tammy Peeples (Randy), Angie Taylor (Steve), Jennifer Chapman (Andrew), Christina Lewis, Jerry Burr, Danielle Burr; 18 great-grandchildren, Logan Carter, Nick and Luke French, Richard, Megan, Morgan and Robert Karcher, Rachel, Christopher, and Julie Cox, Nathaniel and Calah Carter, Brittany and Ashley Peeples, Michael Cartledge, Kaitlyn Chapman, Lauren Lewis, and Brooklyn Burr. Harry Carter was indeed a great man. He was a man of God and integrity, and left a permanent, positive mark on my life. My father, Rev. James Kelly, loved Harry Carter who encouraged and tirelessly supported my dad in his ministry and Christian outreach. My mother and I were devastated when my father was killed and we were hospitalized; Harry and Mrs. Alice's unselfish acts of kindness and wisdom pulled us through these tough times.

When Harry promised something, he delivered. He promised to take me fishing one cold day in December, and though he had a thousand other things to do, and preparing the boat was a pain, the lake was choppy, it was freezing, etc., there were a thousand reasons to get out of it, he took me. That one act has remained with me to this day; when I make a promise, I keep it.

He also had a remarkable sense of humor and an ability to get things off of center and moving. Bonneau Baptist was attempting to decide what color the new carpet should be. The typical never-ending, carpet-purchase, Baptist-business-meeting marathon was going on and on and on, with everyone presenting his argument for the color and telling all the others why their choice was superior; the colors had been narrowed down to the complete visible spectrum. It appeared an impasse had been reached, when he said, "Why don't we let everyone pick a 1 foot square piece of his color, and we can sew them together and have a checkerboard carpet?" After the laughter had subsided and everyone realized how truly insignificant carpet color is compared with winning souls for Christ and worship, a consensus was shortly reached. Ironically, it was the same color that Mr. Carter had initially suggested.

Harry stood tall, because he bent his knee to God and his faith was evident by his works.

I am envious that Harry, Mrs. Alice and my dad are once again together, but also know that one day I will be with them.
