Harrison Forrester Obituary

FORRESTER, Harrison PAWLEYS ISLAND - Harrison Smith Forrester, of Pawleys Island, died July 9, 2006. Funeral services will be graveside at All Saints Church, Pawleys Island at 11:00 a.m. on July 11, 2006. The family is at home on Pawleys Island. Mr. Forrester was born in Atco, Ga. in 1918, and was the son of the late Lindsay Johnson and Agnes Smith Forrester. He moved with his family to Greenville, SC in 1933 and graduated from Greenville High School in 1936. He received a BS in Architecture from Clemson University in 1941, where he played on the golf team for 3 years, and served as captain. He was predeceased by a brother, Lindsay J. Forrester, Jr. of Greenville, SC. A younger brother, Dr. James W. Forrester, resides in Georgetown, SC. Mr. Forrester entered the military service in 1942 as a 2ndLt. He served as an infantry company commander with the 7thArmored Division through out WW II (ETO), and was discharged as a Major in 1945. His decorations include the Purple Heart, Silver Star with cluster, Bronze Star, Croix de Guerre, Medal of Verdon, Combat Infantry, plus several campaign ribbons. Upon leaving the service, he joined J. E. Sirrine Co., Greenville, SC in 1945, as an apprentice architectural draftsman. In 1948, he opened his own private practice, where he remained until 1954 when he rejoined J. E. Sirrine Co. as a partner. He retired in 1979 as vice president in charge of the Architect-Engineer Division. Mr. Forrester was an honorary member of the Greenville Country Club and the Cotillion Club both of Greenville, SC. He was a former member of American Institute of Architecture, the South Carolina Architectural Registration Board from 1970 to 1980 (serving as chairman in 1973/74 and 1979/80), National Council of Architectural Registration Board, Greenville Council of Architects, Kiwanis Club (where he chaired the AAAA High School Golf Tournament from 1966 to 1979), Wachesaw Plantation Club, and the Debordieu Beach Club. He was a member of the Litchfield Country Club. Upon Retirement, he moved to Pawleys Island, where he has resided since 1979. He has been a very avid golfer and fisherman until age had its way. He was elected as a council member to the Town Council of Pawleys Island when it was first incorporated. Surviving are: his wife of 39 years, Anne Clemmons Forrester; daughter, Marsha Hunt Forrester and her husband John Gilmore of Greer, SC; son, Harrison Smith Forrester, Jr. and his wife Stacy Holtsclaw Forrester of Greenwood, SC; daughter, Jamie Self Forrester of Pawleys Island, SC; step daughter, Laura Hughes Graves and her husband Eugene Graves of Big Flat, Arkansas; step son, George Jackson Hughes, Jr. and his wife Velda Carter Hughes of Greenville, SC; and step daughter, Rita Hughes Lee of Columbia, SC.
