Harold Whack Obituary

WHACK, SR. Harold Deacon Harold Whack, Sr., of Charleston, died Sunday at a local nursing care facility. Born February 16, 1920, the only son of Jessie and Maggie Whack, he was 88 when he entered eternal rest. He was the husband of Lillian Smalls Whack, his surviving widow. Having met Lillian, also of Charleston, on March 15, 1937, they married on February 26, 1941 forming a cherished union lasting 67 years. They gave life to three daughters and four sons. Harold worked as a carpenter at Ball and Cox construction companies. A devout Christian leader, Harold joined Calvary Baptist Church in Charleston on March 3, 1940, where he formed the church's first Boy Scout Troop and served as Scout Master for 15 years until 1955. Ordained a church deacon on January 23, 1943, Harold led Deacon Division #1 at Calvary church for 57 years until January 23, 2000. During this time his Deacon Division attracted the largest enrollment share of church members as he became a Deacon Board Chairman. Throughout his church life, Harold engaged in family counseling and youth development activities while serving 32 years as Sunday School Superintendent from 1940-1972. He led many Summer Vacation Bible School sessions and was active in the Baptist Training Union (BTU) and The brotherhood, a church fellowship society. Despite only having completed the ninth grade at Burke High School circa 1936, Harold urged the importance of academic achievement for his children who went on to attend Harvard University, Syracuse University, Penn State University, Tuskegee Institute and St. Augustine College. At Burke School, Harold served as President of the Parent Teacher Association from 1967-1972 during which time he led many administrative and fund raising projects enabling annual presentations of college scholarships, the construction of a new school gymnasium, the purchase of Burke Band uniforms and an organ console for the school's new gymnasium. Harold is survived by his wife Lillian; and sons, Joseph of Fayetteville, NC, Hal (Rita) of Chicago, IL, Phillip (Delores) of Columbia, SC, Michael of Charleston; and his daughter, Donna Burch of Charleston; six grand children and three great grand children. Flowers will be accepted and memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 620 Rutledge Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403; 843-723-0069. Love's greatest gift is "Remembrance"! Weeping may endure for a nite but pure "joy" cometh in the morning. I will always be fond of his "mustache" (since living on Sumter Street in Charleston as a child and attending Calvary Baptist Sunday School)-- smile! He always had a smile "out-of-this-world" and encouragement
for everyone! Our prayers go out to the family! Ida M. (Green) Worix

Harold Mack lead a remarkable life and produced a great family, which is the certain evidence of his character, wisdom and time well spent. I know his sons, Michael and Phil, who are wonderful people, smart and successful men, each following the extraordinary role model who was their father. I share in the family's loss and rejoice in the blessings that are theirs forever.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Whack family.

I was blessed to have Mr. Whack as a neighbor for many, many years. He would always wave to us as we drove by, or have kind words on for you on his front lawn.

You were truly blessed to have him in your lives...cherish the memories that he has left for you in the days ahead!
