I served under Captain Marshall's command of the USS MARYLAND and again at SP 205. He treated me with such trust and respect. Because of his leadership he made his commands very successful. I learned a lot from him and enjoyed working for him both times. Even when I was not promoted and had to leave the Navy he send me a wonderful personal card and note. One of my greatest regrets in life was not to keep in touch with him.

It was a pleasure caring for Mr. Marshall and his wife. We had many awesome conversations and, with what little time we did spend together, Mr. Marshall was always upbeat, kind, optimistic, spoke highly of his family, friends, and hobbies.
I had no idea about his military service until reading his obituary. That knowledge adds a lot of depth to my understanding of the character with which he lived his life and I appreciate him even more knowing of the sacrifices he made and the service he provided for our country's freedom.
He will definitely be missed by us all.

Sorry to hear of CAPT Marshall's passing. Deepest condolences to his family. CAPT Marshall was a great CO that I admired while on the MARYLAND. From PRECOM, Commissioning, & change of homework I learned a lot from him as his Leading Yeoman. RIP Skipper, we have the watch now!!

I met Capt. Marshall aboard the USS Maryland during my tour in Sonar. I was assigned the duties as Ships Oceanographer as a STS2/SS. I remember his first words to me during the briefing - "If you don't know just say you don't, then go find out." Always pushing us to be better and excel at our duties. He will sorely be missed. Capt. Marshall, rest your oars.

Sis, Mike and I just got this news. Hal was such a sweet man and we were privileged to know him. We are thankful that you were blessed to be his wife. We love you, Sis, and hope to see you soon.

Hal and I were shipmates briefly on USS Baltimore (SSN704). Hal relieved me as CO. I stayed on the staff in Norfolk and was able to observe Hal bring the ship back to life after the post-shakedown availability at Newport News Shipbuilding. He than took Balitimore on a very successful classified operation in the North Atlantic.
His success on Baltimore led to his selection as CO on a new Trident missile sub Maryland, based in King's Bay.
His family is our prayers.

Sis, Barbara and I were so sorry to hear of the loss of Hal. He was always so likable and fun to be around. I was amazed to read of his many Navy accomplishments. I had no idea he had done so much.
Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. I am sure he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Captain Marshall was my first CO when I reported aboard BALTIMORE SSN704 in July 85. Submariners never forget these things. He was a talented skipper, always challenging us to excel in our duty. My prayers of peace, comfort, and understanding go to his loved ones.
RIP Skipper. We have the watch. SALUTE

I served with Hal on USS Bluefish (SSN 675) when he was in his engineer tour, and I reported to him as Damage Control Assistant.
Hal was finest Naval officer I have ever known. He led by example. Having been both enlisted and officer, he communicated both up and down the chain easily, and was never insulting or demeaning. He had tremendous respect for his people, and it showed in his daily actions. He was always considerate of the families of the people under his authority.
One of the prized pictures in my office is an aerial shot of the USS Baltimore and the sailing ship Pride of Baltimore, signed by Hal.
I was saddened by the news of his death. I knew the prognosis was not good, but I had always known Hal to be such an upbeat fighter, I had high hopes of his success.
Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate!

Hal was Chief of Staff at Group 6 when I was a brand new CO and he helped me get through two significant challenges. He was a fair man and a level-headed leader and left a legacy in the submarine force.

Hal continued to serve after his military career was completed, not ended. He worked tirelessly on many community issues in the heat, cold, and rain. I never heard him complain while serving others. Prayers for his family and many friends.
