Harold Fleming Obituary

Harold E. Fleming, M.D. SPARTANBURG - Harold Edward Fleming, M.D., 69, of 314 Glendalyn Place, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 7, 2009. A Spartanburg native, Dr. Fleming was born on September 4, 1940, the son of Marie Williams Fleming and the late Cranford Harold Fleming. He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Elizabeth Burnett Fleming, and four children: Harold Edward Fleming, Jr., M.D. and wife Andrea Cook Fleming of Palo Alto, California; Nicholas Fred Fleming, M.D. and wife Lisa Weston Fleming of Spartanburg; Elizabeth Anne Fleming, Ph.D. of Spartanburg; and Melissa Jo Fleming of New York, New York. Dr. Fleming was a beloved grandfather to four grandchildren: Carson Edward Fleming, Caroline Elizabeth Fleming, Adelaide Elizabeth Fleming Selch and Beatrice Anne Fleming Selch. He is also survived by his sister, Candace Fleming Chazen. Dr. Fleming received a bachelor's degree from Wofford College in 1961 and was graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1965. Following advanced training and fellowships, he entered private practice as a cardiologist and internist in 1973. A leader in Spartanburg's medical community for over thirty-five years, Dr. Fleming worked tirelessly as a committed and compassionate physician, unswervingly dedicated to his patients' immediate care and long term well-being. Dr. Fleming was a former member of the Board of Trustees for Mary Black Hospital. In the late 1990s, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care and served as that institution's first chief of staff. In 1997, Dr. Fleming earned a M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. A longtime advocate of Spartanburg's economic development, he was the founding and managing partner of Carolina Medical Associates. Throughout his career, he developed a variety of health care enterprises that sought to advance medical care and accessibility across the Upstate. This vision came to full fruition in 2005 with the opening of North Grove Medical Park. As the originator and developer of this comprehensive medical complex, Dr. Fleming sought to streamline patient care by creating a centralized, multi-specialty facility with particular emphasis on coordinated diagnostic services and a patient-friendly environment. Dr. Fleming was also a founder and member of the Board of Directors of First South Bank, a leading regional bank launched in 1996. A lifelong learner with an innate curiosity and keen intellect, Dr. Fleming was honored in 2005 with the establishment of the Harold E. Fleming Chair of Philosophy at Converse College. With a focus on ethics, this endowment reflects Dr. Fleming's abiding belief in the power of global citizenship and personal responsibility. Dr. Fleming served as a member of the Spartanburg County Commission on Higher Education and was a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Spartanburg Day School and the Advisory Committee of the University of South Carolina-Upstate. A member of First Presbyterian Church, Dr. Fleming was an enthusiastic and generous supporter of Spartanburg's various civic and arts initiatives. He was a former member of the Downtown Rotary Club. Characterized by limitless energy and a quiet authority, Dr. Fleming is remembered not only as a man of broad vision, but more poignantly as a healer deeply devoted to his patients' wellness. He was an innovative thinker and quick wit, defined by an indomitable spirit and belief in the power of human potential. He was loved and admired by many, and his life leaves an indelible mark upon those he served, those he befriended and those he inspired. A service celebrating Dr. Fleming's life will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, conducted by the Reverend Dr. David Renwick. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends at a reception at the Piedmont Club. Honorary pallbearers will be Stanley Wayne Baker, William Barnet III, James Dewitt Bearden III, M.D., James Sidney Fulmer, M.D., Roger Adolf Ferdinand Habisreutinger, Thomas Edward Hannah, Ben C. Harrison, William Brownlee Lowry, M.D., William Mendenhall Webster IV, John Belton White, Jr. and Julian Lake Williams, M.D. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Harold E. Fleming Chair of Philosophy, Converse College, 580 East Main Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29302; or to the Patients' Independence Fund of the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care, in care of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation, 101 East Wood Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29303. Not sure what to say?

I worked with Dr. Flemng in the CCU at SGH in the '70's. He was always a gentleman, a great doc,and a good friend. (His dad and mine worked together for a long time in the SPD.) Some of the new docs could take a lesson from his demeanor....he was a pleasure to work with.
I share your loss.

My husband and I have been patients of Dr.Harold Flening since He entered practice in Spartanburg. He was up on all the most recent medical information. He treated you as if you were the only one he had that day. He not only recommended what was needed for your medical Problem, but discussed the things happening in Spartanburg, also inguired about your children. He never failed to let you know about his children's accomplishments. He was so proud of his family.
His greatest excitement was the day he decided he was going to build North Grove. He had talked about it for a long time. We are so happy that he was able to see his dream completed.
He never lost his human touch wit or humor as long as he was able to come to the office. We could write a book on all of his great qualities.

This is written so the family will be able to understand just how much he trusted and loved his patients. Not many are blessed with his bedside manor nor take time to be so caring.

We were unable to write in the memory book after Dr. Fleming's service.

My fondest memory is when our baby son who had a heart problem due to a strep infection woke up very ill one morning.I called Dr. Coan and his reply was Harold is in school to become a physician. He will meet you at the office and he will start an I. V.with medications that will be called to the office to use in the fluids.
I took a very frighten little four year old boy to the office. We were met by a very kind and patient man. He calmed my baby son and started the I.V. with no problems.Dr Fleming knew I had to be in Columbia for a confrence on a child at two p.m. I was shocked when he gave me his home phone number to call when I returned home that afternoon to let him know how our child was as the office would probably be closed.

I was greatly impressed with his kind and caring attitude, humor and wit.

Dr.Fleming was a very special person. He touched so many lives and was a friend to all who knew him.He had a special way of making people laugh and when he walked into a room it lit up with such happiness and joy.He loved to joke around with his patients and his staff. He loved his family so much and would tell me stories of his children and always smiled when he spoke their names. He loved telling the story of the birth Nick.I think one of the funnest stories was when the fire truck was called to the neighbors house. When Harold got home, all the kids were in the house around a boardgame; they had no clue that the fire truck was outside. He asked the children if they knew the fire truck was outside and they pretended that they did not.Dr. Harold did get to the bottom of it, though. He would laugh when he told the story of Ms.Lib taking Nick to school and leaving the keys in the car and of course Nick locked the doors and Ms.Lib couldn't get him to open the door.So of course, Dr.Fleming had to go to her rescue. As soon as Nick saw his dad, he opened the door and took Dr.Fleming's hand and walked right into school.I am so going to miss all the stories that he so loved to share with all of us and his humor.Dr.Fleming helped me in so many ways,he was a great listener, advisor and leader. The years I worked for him were some of the best years of my life.I have so much respect for him and I always felt like he was like a second father to me.He will truely be missed and never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He loved each of you with no end and may that love help you through this difficult time.

To the Fleming family: I have been a patient of Dr. Harold even before he had his own practice, he was working in the emergency room and filling in for Dr. Miller, Dr Miller was my doctor at that time and when Dr Miller died and he went into that practice I stayed with him ever since. He was much more than a doctor to me, he was a good friend. I pray that God will continue to bless all the Fleming family.
