Harold Fairchild Obituary



FAIRCHILD, Harold COLUMBIA - Funeral services for Harold Hughey Fairchild, 65, of Columbia and St. Helena Island, will be held Saturday at 10:13 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:13 p.m. 8:13 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605. Mr. Fairchild died Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Harold Leroy and Dorothy Hughey Fairchild. He retired from Allied Chemical after 33 years as a master industrial electrician. Mr. Fairchild was a member of the Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Jamil Shrine Center, Jesters, Jamil Racers, a founding member of the Jamil Warriors and the Jamil Gangsters Unit. He was Vice Chairman of the Jamil Shrine Circus for many years. Harold was a loyal friend to the Royal Hanneford Circus owners and performers. A co-founder of Jamil Junior Shrine Bowl, he was a former owner of Outaways in Rowesville, SC and past member of the SC Police K-9 Association. He loved salt water fishing, boating, shrimping, bowling, NASCAR and golfing with his good friend, Raymond Poindexter. Mr. Fairchild also loved watching Fox News. He will be missed by all who knew him, including his faithful companions, Tag and Pretty Kitty. Surviving are his loving wife of 46 years, Martha Fairchild; daughter, Heather Colleen Fairchild of Columbia; granddaughter, Shelby Colleen Stroud of Columbia, who affectionately called him Ooda; brothers, Jon Fairchild and Roy Fairchild and his wife Linda, all of Lexington; sisters, Peggy Shull and her husband Ed of West Columbia, Lynn Wooten and her husband Chuck of Lexington and Patty Fairchild of Lexington; aunts and uncles, Paul and Jean Hughey, Doris Hughey, Inez Hughey, Tony Fairchild, Charlie Kost and Jean Fairchild; several nieces and nephews and cousins; and a host of friends. He was predeceased by a son, Harold Hughey Fairchild, Jr. and an infant daughter. Mr. Fairchild was a cancer survivor and the family would like to give special thanks to the South Carolina Oncology Association, especially Dr. Phillip Baldwin, Miss Lillian, Miss Tess and Miss Wendy for their loving care.
