H. Fudenberg Obituary

H. Hugh Fudenberg, M.D. SPARTANBURG, SC - South Carolina scientist H. Hugh Fudenberg, holder of many major medical-research awards, has passed away. He was 85. Prof. Fudenberg was the holder of the Pasteur Medal from the Institut Pasteur in Paris, the annual awards of the American Academy for Allergy, the American Academy of Dermatology, and 30+ other annual medals from numerous countries and American societies honoring research in various medical fields. He was twice an invited participant at the Nobel prize proceedings. Dr. Fudenberg died March 15 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. After working at the Rockefeller Institute in New York and the University of California, San Francisco, he moved to South Carolina in 1974, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Basic & Clinical Immunology and Microbiology at MUSC, before opening the Neuro-Immunotherapeutics Research Foundation in Spartanburg in 1991. He later moved the Foundation and his residence to Lake Bowen, where he lived until his death. The son of immigrants from eastern Europe, he is survived by four sons, Drew Fudenberg of Lexington, MA and his wife Geneen; Brooks R. Fudenberg of Charleston; David M. Fudenberg of Palo Alto, CA and his wife Kim; Hugh Haskell Fudenberg of Inman, SC; and seven grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 in the Lodge at Lake Bowen Commons, 7116 Highway 9, Inman. Visitation at 6:00 PM, service at 6:30 PM. I worked with Dr. Fudenberg for almost 20 years and was sad to read of his passing. He and his wife Betty Roof both had clever senses of humor that I enjoyed. My thoughts are with his sons.
