Guy Tarrant Obituary

Guy Matthews Tarrant, Jr. COLUMBIA - Guy Matthews Tarrant, Jr., passed away Saturday, March 20, 2010. He was born in Greenwood, SC to the late Guy Matthews Tarrant, Sr. and Elizabeth Barnwell Kelly on October 9, 1915. Guy attended Columbia public schools and was awarded his high school diploma from Palmer College Academy in DeFuniak Springs, Fl. on June 24, 1933. Guy attended USC, pledging Sigma Nu Fraternity, and received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson A&M College on May 1, 1938. Guy served his country honorably as a First Lt. in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired as a Major from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. During World War II, he served as General Alexander A. Vandergrift's aide. Upon completion of his uniform service he returned to Columbia where he served as vice-president of Southern Building Corp. Later he founded Lafaye-Tarrant Construction Co., Inc., which he operated for 45 years before retiring in 1978. Guy was a member of the American Association of General Contractors, Kiwanis International, Columbia Ball, First Families of SC, Forest Lake Club, Litchfield Country Club, Quadrille Club, Southern Seniors Golf Association, and the St. Andrews Society. He once served as the Ambassador of Golf to Canada under the late President Dwight Eisenhower's Person to Person Program. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Mackey King Tarrant and and his sister, Elizabeth Tarrant Moffat. Survivors include his wife, Shelvie Belser Tarrant; brother, William Barnwell Tarrant; son, Guy Cheves Tarrant (Teresa Jenkins) of Charleston, SC; daughters, Bet and Mackey Tarrant of Columbia SC; grandsons, Langdon Cheves Tarrant (Jennifer Doles) of Jacksonville, FL, Joseph McCord Tarrant of Charleston, SC; great grandchildren, Adaire Christine and Langdon Cheves Tarrant, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; cousin, Charlotte Roehm Taylor (James) of Hilton Head Island, SC; his stepchildren, Robert Henry Burnside, Jr. (Linda Goodwin), Ashley Burnside Brantley (Benjamin Edward Brantley) of Columbia, SC; Debra Burnside Rentz (Richard Daryl Rentz) of Brunswick, Ga; seven granddaughters and two grandsons. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 22, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Averyt Hall on Marion Street, Columbia, SC, with burial immediately following in the Church yard. Although certainly a very sad time for you, you are fortunate in that you have a wonderful support group in Columbia to help you in these difficult times.
