for Gregory Covington

Not sure what to say?

September 8, 2011

Ms. Covington-Reid, it has been so long since my children and I have had the pleasure of seeing you, and we are so very sorry to hear this devastating news. You taught all 3 of my children, and even after all these years, when I told Austin the news, he said "Greg?" He remembers your sons' names; it tells me that you meant a lot to him; you did to all 3 of them, and we are hurting for you and thinking about you.

My Son Greg

Matthew 6:19-21

19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Greg arrived in this world in the early morning hours of July 12, 1983. Leonard was driving the car as fast as he could from West Ashley to downtown St Francis hospital with two year old Ben in the back seat.

I thought I was going to birth him in the car! We arrived and the nurse whisked me upstairs. I told her, “He’s coming!” and she said, “No, not yet.” And I said, “Yes! He’s coming!” There was no time for drugs or prep work or anything. Greg was on his way and no one was stopping him. Less than 45 minutes after arriving at the hospital, I was holding my second son in my arms.

He was the hairiest baby I had ever seen! He had hair on his ears and on his back and the hair on his forehead came down to his eyebrows like Herman Munster. Leonard named him Gregory after his best friend and roommate in college. I named him Blake because it sounded so regal and distinguished. Gregory Blake.

Greg was born with a happy spirit. I was holding him in the hospital, talking to him and he would smile up at me so sweetly. I told my mom, “Look at him smiling at me.” Mom said, “Oh that is just gas.” But I know better. He WAS smiling at me. A mother knows.

Greg was the happiest baby, toddler, boy, man I have ever known. Whatever his circumstances, he always had a smile. He was like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. You could squeeze him and the giggles and laughter would come out. His son Blake is just like him. Go ahead, squeeze him and see what he does.

I remember the first time Ben saw Greg in the hospital. He was so thrilled to have a baby brother. He walked in with a big, blue balloon and looked at Greg in my arms. He said, “Ooooh mommy, can I hold him?” He was immediately filled with love for his baby brother and there were always there for each other growing up.

When we first brought Lisa home from the hospital, I was sitting on the couch holding her. Greg looked at Lisa. Then he looked at her on my lap, which had been his spot up until now. He said, “Mommy, we got to TAKE HER BACK to the hospital!” He didn’t like this baby usurping his spot on his lap! He got over it though and grew to love his sister with all of his heart like she loved him.
I am so thankful Len and I took our children to church while they were growing up. God gave me the special privilege of leading Greg through the sinner’s prayer. God makes it so simple for us to accept his son Jesus as our Lord and Savior. As a young boy Greg prayed, “Dear Jesus, I know I am a sinner and I ask you to forgive me of my sins and come into my heart.” See how simple it is? Greg talked with Pastor Coleman and he was baptized right here in this church. My treasure was bound for Heaven.

It took me a while to realize what my treasures were exactly. In my younger adult years I thought is was a big house, fancy car, beautiful clothes. It took a divorce for me to learn what my real treasures are- my children; Ben, Greg and Lisa. I realized I can take these treasures to Heaven with me. And I have been so richly blessed.

Many of you have your own memories of Greg and you know how he brought a smile to your face. He was so silly – funny – genuine. I have Greg with me today. He lives on through his daughter Aubrie. She has his dark hair and dark eyes. She is such a beautiful little girl. Her daddy was beautiful, or I guess I should say so handsome. He lives on through his son Blake. Through his silly ways and his whirlwind energy. Thank you Amy for giving me these two beautiful grandchildren and for being the best mommy in the world. You never gave up on Greg and from the deepest reaches of my heart I thank you for that.

Thank you to Donna and Marshall for being a second set of parents to my children Ben, Greg, and Lisa and for always being there. Thank you to Larry and Jean for being my loving brother and sister-in-law and helping through all my stressful times. Thank you to Leonard for giving Greg a place to live so he had a safe place to lay his head each night.

Greg has won the race. His work here on earth is finished. I know I will see him again. I have already seen his smiling face. He told me he was happy. I believe him.

John 14: 1-3 says:
Let not your heart be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there ye may be also.

So, let not your hear be troubled. We will see Greg again one day. And he will be ready with his big wide smile and open arms for a hug.

I love you, Greg.

Love,
Mom

My thoughts and prayers are with the Covington family during this difficult time. I grew up with Greg all throughout elementary and middle school, and his mother was my third grade teacher. He was outgoing, funny, and genuine. Three very respectable traits to possess. May God be with Greg and your family in this time of sorrow.
