Glendlyn Mellis Merinkers CONCORD, NC - Glendlyn "Laney" Mellis Merinkers passed away Thursday, January 13, 2022. Laney was born in Charleston, South Carolina on April 27, 1934, and was one of many brothers and sisters. She retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, having worked in various positions throughout her career. However, Laney's real work was defined in her service to her family. She was a true friend to many, and she always strived to help others in any way possible. Her faith was an important part of her life, and through her words and witness, she helped many to live a Christ centered life. As a Christian woman she exemplified God's love of family, friends, and anyone in need. She is predeceased by her husband, George, her parents and three siblings. Her surviving family includes son, Nick Merinkers, (Heather); daughters, Sharon Heavner (Ed); Brenda Hydrick; Holly Bell (Andy); Kim Janacek; Laura Martin; Gina Mock (Tommy); Angie Smoak (Larry). Laney was such a strong woman, always there for each of us girls. She loved for us to text back and forth and it was amazing to me that she learned texting later in life. She missed going out dancing and we often talked about that. She will be greatly missed. Love you Laney! Enjoy your time in heaven. Until we are back together...

The thing I loved the most about Laney was her perpetual smile and that sweet Southern drawl.
You could feel the warmth just oozing out of every pore. She wanted you to be comfortable and welcome at anytime. She was a beautiful woman inside and out and she welcomed my daughter into the family as if she had known her since the day she was born.
I learned to Shag from George and her and just as I entrusted my precious daughter to her, she in turn gave us her most precious son Nick. We were both blessed duly blessed. And she will be greatly missed by so many. But I am sure there is some beach music being played in heaven and George and Laney have the floor!

When I was a young girl your dad, George was one of my dad's best friends. My dad was Gilbert Smith and he owned the nightclub The Coconut Grove. Your dad being a Chas. County policeman used to come by our home quite often to see my dad. My greatest memories are your dad sitting and playing the piano with me. Oh how I loved your daddy. I wish I had known your mom as she was one gracious lady. My blessings of peace be with each of you. Just wanted to share this wonderful childhood memory I have of your daddy with you at this time when I know your mom and dad are together again. Rhonda Smith 843.708.0034

That picture looks just like I remember her. She had special genes because I don't think she ever aged. She was a beautiful lady.
