Gladys Lane Obituary

Gladys Parrott Lane CHARLESTON - On December 19, 2024, during the Christmas season she so dearly loved to decorate for, Gladys Parrott Lane died peacefully after an extended illness. Born March 18, 1934 in Scranton, South Carolina, (current population 655) in Florence County, Gladys was the eighth of twelve children born to Weldon Andrew Parrott and Mary Ann Douglas Parott. After attending Florence County schools, she and her sister, Mary, moved to Charleston, where she started her love affair with King Street, working at Kerrison's Department store alongside her sister, best friend, and roommate, Mary. Throughout her life, Gladys enjoyed witnessing King Street's journey of never ending change. Another love affair developed, but this time with Charleston native Al Lane, to whom she married in 1957 at John Wesley United Methodist Church, just across the Ashley River. Mary followed suit, marrying Al's best friend, Harold Hilton. The family grew with the arrival of two daughters, Lois and Kristen. Al's career with the Boy Scouts of America took the family to six cities in his thirty five year career. Upon returning to Charleston after Al's retirement, both affairs continued, as King Street evolved with Al at her side. Sadly, Al died in 2016 after 59 years of marriage. During her many years in Charleston, Gladys never lived further than two blocks away from King Street. The efforts through her kind and giving heart helped many through various charities, with Meals on Wheels being a favorite. Gladys is survived by her two daughters, Lois Lane and Kristen Lane, both of Charleston, her last surviving sibling, Mary Andrioni of Huntsville, Alabama, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the French Protestant (Huguenot) Church, 136 Church Street, at 2:00 PM on February 8, 2025, followed by a reception in the Parrish Hall; 44 Queen Street. Interment in the church cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, should one wish to donate to a charity in her name, please consider Meals on Wheels, CASC, 259 Meeting Street Charleston, SC 29401, the French (Huguenot) Church, 136 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401, or the charity of one's choice. I recall both parents of my old friend Lois Lane and have often wondered about "those nice people." My sympathies to Lois and her sister. God Bless Gladys and Al too.
