Gilbert Brooks Obituary

BROOKS, Gilbert Departed beloved husband and father, Gilbert E. Brooks, 73, died May 11th, 2005 after an illness at Roper Hospital. Born in Bisbee, Arizona on July 19, 1931 to the late James L. Brooks and Serena Pearl K. Brooks. Gil is survived by his loving wife, Susan H. Brooks of James Island and four children: Catherine Lenore Brooks Edrada (husband, Rolando) of Knoxville, TN; Michele Marie Brooks of Charlotte, NC; Christopher Gilbert Brooks (wife,Geovanna) of Atlanta, GA; and Philip Barbin Brooks (wife, Nikki) of James Island; his sister, Marilyn Brooks Ross of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; nieces Rosalie Brooks Butler and Karen Brooks, both of Bisbee, AZ; nephews Theodore T. Brooks of Derry, NH, Gilbert E. Brooks of Bisbee, AZ, Roger Brooks of Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and his first wife and mother of his children, Colette Barbin Brooks. He is the beloved grandfather of eight grandchildren: Daniel, Amanda, David and Dylan Edrada; Colette and Michael Brooks, Baylee Brooks, and another on the way. Gil received his B.A. Degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He was a 1stLieutenant in the US Army at Fort Knox from 1955-1957 and is a Certified Life Underwater (CLU). Gil retired after 35 years as a general insurance agent with National Life of Vermont and American National. He taught in the Continuing Education Program at Trident Technical College for 17 years. He was a charter member of the Estate Planners Association and life member of the Harbour Club of Charleston. He is an active member of the Charleston Kiwanis Club where he served as Past President and Lt. Governor. He received special distinction as a life member and Hixon Fellow. He has been the Kiwanis Club Secretary for the past 27 years. He is an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church where he greatly enjoyed singing in the choir and playing hand bells. He will be sadly missed by his wife, family and many wonderful friends. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 15, 2005 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 16, 2005 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark United Methodist Church, 413 Geddes Ave., West Ashley. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. Flowers accepted or memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice of Charleston, 3870 Leeds Ave, Suite 101, N. I will always remember Uncle Gilbert as a witty and full of fun. I don't know if my parents, Bob and Rosalie, would have gone on the Alaskan cruise without Gilbert's urging. It was a nice trip for all. May God bless you all at this sad time.

I will miss Gil's fun visits, and his little giggles.. He always brightned my day and brought a smile to my face everytime he came into the office....He was a wonderful and loving man..
