Gilbert Baldwin, Jr. MD CHARLESTON - Gilbert Baldwin, Jr., M.D., age 79, died peacefully on October 26, 2025, at Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community in Charleston, South Carolina, following complications from diabetes. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Constance Montague Baldwin. The only child of James Gilbert Baldwin and Ellen Douglas Gee Baldwin, "Gil" was born in Richmond, Virginia, on May 28, 1946. After growing up in Richmond, he was a student at the University of Virginia for eight years. Gil, a Lawn resident in his senior year, received his undergraduate degree in 1968. Graduating in 1972 from UVA Medical School, he was Class Vice-President all four years and inducted into the University's Raven Society. Gil moved to Charleston for an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Two weeks after he moved, he met Connie and they married eight months later on March 10, 1973, at St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Fulfilling his military commitment, Gil served in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1975 to 1977 in Kitzingen and Wurzburg, Germany. Making Army and German friends, the couple embraced living overseas and visiting many places in Europe. Retiring as a Major, Gil later joined the Army Reserves. After returning to Charleston in 1977, Gil completed a fellowship in hematology at MUSC. He then joined the faculty and, in 1986, became a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He was at MUSC until 1991 when his Reserve unit was called up for Desert Storm. Following one year back on active duty, he was first at the US Naval Hospital Charleston and then helped establish the MUSC James Island Internal Medicine office where he worked until 2008. Gil finished his professional life as the Associate Medical Director of Select Health of South Carolina. He thoroughly enjoyed his patients and the practice of medicine, especially witnessing the advances made in treating AIDS and hematologic cancers during the course of his career. A life-long Episcopalian, Gil served as Junior and Senior Warden of Saint Stephen's Church. He was President of the Clergy Society, which was founded in 1762, and a longtime Board member. His community volunteer work included Medical Director of Hospice of Charleston and on the Boards of My Sister's House, American Red Cross, and Historic Ansonborough Neighborhood Association. His memberships include the Carolina Yacht Club, the Yale Club of New York, the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of South Carolina, and the Preservation Society of Charleston. Gil was especially active in the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati where he was elected Marshal and then Vice President. From 2010 until his death, he served on the Museum Committee of the General Society of the Cincinnati including terms as Vice-Chairman and Chairman. Gil's outgoing personality, and wonderful sense of humor drew people to him throughout his life. He faced major health challenges with bravery, a positive attitude, and grace. He was grateful for the opportunities he had been given and the people he met along the way. Gil loved the Lowcountry of South Carolina especially Edisto Island, months spent in Florence, Italy, and other travels, his dachshunds, and most sports, but all sports cars. Gil Baldwin was a consummate gentleman who approached everyone as an equal and, throughout his life, embraced the Honor Code at University of Virginia. He leaves family and friends lasting memories of a vibrant soul and wit. His ultimate legacy will be the Montague-Baldwin Endowment at the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina. The private graveside funeral is at Magnolia Cemetery and a reception for family and friends will be on Wednesday, October 29, at 4:00pm in Blackmer Hall at Bishop Gadsden.
