Gertrude Bowen Obituary

Gertrude Huskins Bowen MARION, NC - Mrs. Gertrude Huskins Bowen, age 94, of Marion, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016 at Hospice of Rutherford County in Forest City. Originally from Wetumpka, AL, she was born April 26, 1921 to the late William and Nellie Shields. Gertrude worked as an LPN in Charleston, SC for Drs. James Martin and Julian Buxton in the 1960s. After moving to North Carolina, she completed her RN at Western Carolina University and her BSN at UNC Charlotte. She later retired from the Emergency Room at Grace Hospital. She was also a devoted Air Force wife to her husband of 50 years, Joe Huskins. Gertrude enjoyed reading and was a member of Garden Creek Baptist Church. She had a deep love for her family and will be dearly missed by them. Left to cherish Gertrude's memory is her husband, Ben Bowen of Marion; three children, Sheila Huskins of Marion, Diane Huskins McCants and husband Roger of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Kay Huskins Clark and husband Ron of Marion; seven grandchildren, Debi Oelze, John J. Wolff, George J. Wolff, Paul J. Wolff, Dr. Jeff Dinkins, Kristin Masterson, and Travis Cowper; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A service in celebration of Gertrude's life will be held on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home with Rev. Coy Jeans officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. Flowers are accepted and appreciated.
