Geraldine Amick Obituary

WEST COLUMBIA – Geraldine (Gerry) Cockrell Amick, 87 died Sunday morning after a long illness. Mrs. Amick was born in Batesburg, SC, on November 15, 1922. She graduated with honors from Monetta High in 1940 where she was a member of the girl's all star basketball team which had winning seasons of eight consecutive years. She attended Midlands Technical College and received a degree in horticulture. She and her family owned and operated The Petal Pusher's Greenhouses. Their home was a popular site on the Christmas lights tour on Crepe Myrtle Circle in the Oak Grove community for many years. She was a very loving wife, wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Mrs. Amick was the daughter of the late Broadus Carlton Cockrell and Bertha Reynolds Cockrell of Batesburg.

Mrs. Amick is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Gordon L. Amick; daughter, Genny A. Young (Carl) of West Columbia; grandsons, Will Welch (Rachel Peters) of Lexington, and Dustin Welch of West Columbia; and great-grandson Dalton Welch; sisters, Ruth Risinger of West Columbia and Melba Amick of Lexington; sisters-in-law, Dot Cockrell and Ygenie Cockrell of Lexington, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Iris C. Wessinger; and brothers, Bennie, Chester, Pete Louis and Levon Cockrell.

The funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 27, at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Celestial Memorial Gardens in West Columbia following the funeral. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington.

In lieu of cut flowers, the family has requested flowering plants or shrubbery that can be used to create a colorful outdoor memorial garden, in Gerry's honor.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Ascension Hospice for their loving and compassionate care shown to Mrs. Amick and her family.

Mom, we all miss you so very much! I know you are in God's Garden and are not in anymore pain. You gave me the most wonderful life any daughter could ever ask for. Remembering the days and years you dedicated just to me and my family. No one was ever loved as much as you are, but I know that you would not trade places with us! I will see you in God's Garden :O)

I love you!
