Gerald Hallman Obituary

Rev. Gerald R. "Jerry" Hallman MT. PLEASANT - A native of Rock Hill, SC, Gerald R. Hallman (Jerry) was born to the late Ray and Myrtis Hallman on March 10, 1950, and passed away on Father's Day, Sunday, June 16, 2024. He was a graduate of Rock Hill High School, Erskine College, and Erskine Theological Seminary. He was the Associate Minister of Tabernacle Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) Church in Charlotte, NC, and was the first mission developer of First Presbyterian ARP Church in Hardeeville, SC, before his call to Mooresville, NC. There, he served as minister of the Mooresville ARP Church for 27 years, from 1983-2010. The Hallmans moved to Mount Pleasant, SC, after Jerry retired to be near their daughters and family. While there, he served as the Interim Minister at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, from 2012-2015. Following this, he served as Minister to Belle Isle Presbyterian Church in Pineville, SC. Jerry was Stated Clerk of First Presbytery of the ARP General Synod from 1997-2006 and was active with the Christian Education ministry of First Presbytery and the General Synod throughout his career. He dedicated decades of his life to providing leadership at Bonclarken, Conference Center for the ARP denomination, through various roles and served on the Bonclarken Board of Trustees as both a member and as Chairman. Jerry earned a membership in Bonclarken's Honor Roll - Visionaries and Servant Leaders in 2023. As a lover of music, he enjoyed working as a radio DJ with his lifelong friend, Ervin Robinson, for WARP in Due West, SC. He was an excellent writer and felt privileged to be able to contribute to the Rock Hill Herald as a journalist. Jerry was a talented athlete and an excellent baseball and softball player. He is survived by his wife, Rita Landis Hallman, a native of Covington, VA; and two daughters and their spouses: Dr. Sarah Phelps (Mark) and Jennifer Dixie Norris (John Tugwell). Also surviving are two grandchildren, Gus and Adam Phelps; as well as brother, Phillip Hallman; sisters, Cathy Hallman Welch and Susan Hallman; and many dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bonclarken Conference Center at 500 Pine Drive, Flat Rock, NC 28731 or the charity of your choice. His memorial service will be held Saturday, June 22, 2024, in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1157 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, at 12:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed at wpccharleston.org. Rita, we were so sad to hear of Jerry´s passing. It was not so long ago Jon and I were laughing about the car trip to Anderson with you two. A memory 50 years in the making and still brings a smile to our much older faces. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and the girls. All our love,
Jon and Linda

Jerry and I were classmates at Rock Hill High
School. Jerry was as good a friend as anyone could ever have. We shared a lot of good times and laughs together. I do remember his love for music and baseball. I will always feel blessed that I had Jerry as a friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to Rita and all the Hallman family. I am so sorry for your loss.
