Gerald Beach Obituary

Gerald Lucas Beach, Sr. WALTERBORO, SC - Mr. Gerald Lucas Beach, Sr., 93, of 1747 Beach Road, Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Thursday evening, August 30, 2012, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary DeWitt Beach. Funeral services will be conducted 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, September 2, 2012, from The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Chapel, Walterboro. The Reverend Dr. Theron W. Smith officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro. The family has requested that members of the Will Goodwin Sunday School Class of Bethel United Methodist Church serve as honorary escorts and their presence is requested at The Funeral Chapel at 2:30 that afternoon. Mr. Beach was born May 1, 1919, a native of Walterboro, he was a son of the late Arthur Young Beach and the late Blanche Hiers Beach. He served his country faithfully in the United States Army as a Sergeant during World War II. Following his time in the military, he served our beloved community faithfully for nearly thirty-four years as a postman for the Walterboro Post Office. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, downtown Walterboro, where he and his late wife were vital in the work of the church and were always present in the worship. At Bethel Church, he was formerly a member of the Administrative Board, the Board of Trustees, and the Wesley Bible Class where he served as the treasurer for many years and was currently a member of the Will Goodwin Bible Class and the Methodist Men's Club. He will be fondly remembered for his blueberry patch that he cultivated and tended to with great dedication and also for his love of fishing the local fresh water creeks of Colleton County. Surviving are: a son, Gerald Lucas Beach, Jr. and his wife Pearl of Walterboro; a daughter, Jane Beach Crosby and her husband Jimmy of Walterboro; and a sister, Mary Laughlin of California. There are four grandchildren, Tammy Beach Crosby, Gerald Lucas Beach, III, Stacy Trenton Crosby, and Shannon Craig Crosby; eight great grandchildren as well as a sister-in-law, Janet DeWitt of Chapin that also survive. Flowers will be accepted, or for those who wish, the family has respectfully requested that memorial contributions may be directed in his memory to: Bethel United Methodist Church, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro, South Carolina 29488.
