George Warren Obituary

George Warren CHARLESTON - George Warren left this world on November 26, 2016. George was born on January 16, 1944 in Middletown, New York. He spent his childhood in Allendale, SC and Lexington, KY. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1966 and the University of Louisville Medical School in 1970. From there, he completed his orthopedic residency at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, during which time he met the love of his life, Sharon. Sharon and George were married in 1972. Following his residency, he completed a six month fellowship in hand surgery in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1975, he moved to Summerville, SC, and joined Lowcountry Orthopedics. He and his family later relocated to Charleston, SC. After practicing medicine for 33 years, George retired in the Charleston area. When he stopped practicing medicine, George tirelessly advocated for causes near to his heart. His voice could be heard through his letters to the editor which focused on his belief that all people deserve quality healthcare. Recognizing the community impact of addiction on families and on the healthcare system, he cofounded the Harm Reduction program in the Charleston area. His passion for this project spread to other cities throughout the state. In his spare time, George enjoyed attending a "Theologues" meeting, a poetry class, and assisting families at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Hope House, or spending time in Montreat, North Carolina. In Montreat George enjoyed spending time with his family. His love for the area began when he attended youth conferences as a child and continued with annual family vacations. The Warren Family week-long camping trips in Montreat were a summer staple. In retirement, George set up a permanent camp in Montreat at his mountain home affectionately named "Creek Music." George spent countless hours on the screened porch after a long walk, reading a book, writing poetry, painting, laughing with family, or just enjoying the music and a beer. Everyone who knew George loved him for his sense of humor, his brutal honesty, and his unyielding quest for knowledge. George's family laughs at his creative attempts to discipline by assigning philosophical readings, his schemes to economically feed five children, and his tendency to cry from laughter at the dinner table. We could have wished for nothing better other than more time. George is survived by his wife, Sharon Harris Warren; of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; brother, Alexander McLean Warren, of Georgetown, K.Y.; sons, Todd Alexander Warren (Valerie) of Greensboro, N.C., Scott Nicholas Warren (Linda) of Daniel Island, S.C., Matthew Clay Warren (Elizabeth) of Charleston, S.C.; daughters, Jill Warren King (Bruce) of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; Joy Warren Klingemann (Patrick) of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and eleven grandchildren, Justice and Skye Warren; Avery, Emily Ann, and Lilly Warren; Addie, Margaret, and Anna King; Parker, George, and Samuel Klingemann. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hope House (at Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church), 302 Hibben St., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. A Funeral Service will be held at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Gary Bullard officiating. Expressions of sympathy may be viewed or submitted online at www.McAlister-Smith.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to McALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, MT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1520 RIFLE RANGE ROAD, MT PLEASANT, SC (843) 884-3833. Dr Warren saved the use of our son's right hand after an accident in 1977. We will always be great full for his skill and attention to our son. We and our son are blessed that he has had the normal use of his hand since he was seven years old. Our prayers are with you.
