George Strobel Obituary

George A. Strobel CHARLESTON - George A. Strobel, of Charleston, SC, lost his long hard-fought battle with cancer on Thanksgiving evening, November 26, 2020. George was born on December 12, 1935 to Lucille and George Strobel. After working at the Navy Yard as a pipe fitter, George followed in his father's footsteps by joining the Charleston Police Department in 1963, where he met his lifelong friend, Grady Craven. The two walked a beat in the city before becoming sergeants in the detective division. In 1968, George left Charleston Police Department to work as a substance abuse investigator with the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) Bureau of Drug Control, left to become the Police Chief of the Isle of Palms, returned back to DHEC until his retirement after 29 years on January 30, 1993. George also tried his hand at several other occupations, including plumbing, shrimping, sub shop and security company owner. He truly was a jack of all trades! George had a heart of gold, he was known to stop everything he was doing to help someone with a project or problem. Being from the Lowcountry and growing up on the Ashley river, George enjoyed boating and particularly excelled at water skiing, riding his Harleys, being near the water and enjoying life. Left to learn to live in this world without him are his beloved wife, Dorothy Strobel, his five daughters from former and predeceased wife, Peggy A. Strobel - Debbie Jernigan, Susan Strobel, Sandy (David) Henderson, Lisa (Grady) Query, Georgann (Brian) LeGette, and step- daughters Terry O'Brien, Tracey O'Brien (Schuyler Kropf), 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and cousin, Fred Strobel and wife, Susan. George was predeceased by his step-daughter, Patty June. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hollings Cancer Center.
