George Pitman Obituary

PITMAN, George SOUTHERN PINES, NC - Mr. George Warren Pitman, 79, of Belle Meade Resort & St. Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines, formerly of Charleston, SC, Virginia, VA, and Charlotte, NC, was born December 8, 1927 in Dunn, NC, the son of the late Emma Warren Pitman and Marvin Pitman. He was predeceased by his sister, Ida Warren Hertzig, a niece and a nephew. Mr. Pitman attended Mt. Saint Mary's College in Emmetsburg, Maryland and Bright's School of Design in Chicago Illinois. Mr. Pitman was an entrepreneur and renown designer. He owned and operated Franks Inc. in Sanford, NC, for 5 years before taking his talents to Charlotte in 1963, where he established George Pitman, Inc. He operated his well respected design firm for over 30 years from his beautiful home on Queens Road in Myers ark. His home was purchased at this retirement by the Mecklenburg County Bar Association. Mr. Pitman, a true philanthropist at heart, gave his business to his assistant, Barbara Brown, upon retiring in 1994. In addition to his many personal bequests, he established a trust for St. Patrick Catholic Cathedral in Charlotte. The predominant part of his estate is bequeathed to The Foundation of the Carolina for scholarships. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst. Burial will be at a later date. Surviving him is a cousin, Louis C. Stephens, Jr., and the Stephens children. The family will receive friends following the service at Belle Meade. SKINNER & SMITH FUNERAL HOME in Dunn, NC is in charge of services. Could always spot George's work anywhere we went. He was an outstanding designer. Steve was lucky enough to be able to work with George on many of his design projects. Will always remember him as a friend.
