George Morris Obituary

George John Morris Charleston - George John Morris, 76, husband of Lynette Dandridge Morris, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and friends on March 15, 2018. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. George John Morris are invited to attend his Funeral Service 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends between 6:00 and 8:00 PM Monday, with a 7:30 PM Trisagion service, at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. Online Condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. George Morris was born May 1, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Rivers High School in 1959, and thereafter attended The Citadel, where he graduated in 1963. At the Citadel, he distinguished himself as an honor roll and gold star student. Upon graduation from The Citadel, he was commissioned an officer in the United States Army and served in military intelligence. He was honorably discharged as a captain. After finishing The Citadel, he attended the University of Virginia Law School, where he graduated in 1966. After military service he began the practice of law in the office of United States Senator Ernest F. Hollings and practiced under the firm names of Hollings and Hawkins, Hollings Hawkins and Morris, and Morris Duffy and Boone, which was a successor to the Hollings firm and that of Falcon B. Hawkins, who served as United States District Judge. After his law firm affiliations, he began a solo practice. He was a member of the South Carolina and Charleston County Bar Associations for over a period of 50 years. He has practiced in various Courts to include the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the South Carolina Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Judicial Circuit, and he was admitted to the United States Supreme Court. He was a member of the American Bar Association and the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Charleston, SC and served on its Parish Council for 25 years and as president of the Council for 10 of those years. He also served on the Council of the Diocese of Atlanta and on the Council for the Archdiocese of the Greek Orthodox Church in America. In 2007, he was the Archangel Michael adult honoree chosen by the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, as bestowed by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta. Additionally, he was a past president of Plato Chapter No. 4, Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association), and was honored by the Daughters of Penelope, an AHEPA Auxiliary, for his service in 1991. He helped establish the Plato Chapter No. 4 Scholarship Foundation and served as chairman from its inception. He authored a book published as Charleston's Greek Heritage and also helped establish the archives at the Greek Orthodox Church in Charleston. He was a life member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston, South Carolina. George was well-respected in the legal community. He loved the law and often entertained family and friends with stories about his legal career. He was very proud of his Greek heritage, and especially the legacy of his parents, Margaret Gazes Morris, who was the first woman of Greek descent to teach in Charleston County Schools, and John George Morris, who was the first Greek-American lawyer in Memphis, Tennessee. He had fond memories of his childhood in Memphis and as a result loved the city and was a true Elvis fan. He was also very proud of and devoted to his family and supported them in all their endeavors. He could often be found in Nicole and Dexter's Early Bird Diner enjoying the food and talking with customers. George is survived by his wife, Lynette (Cissy) Dandridge Morris and three children, John George Morris, Katherine Nicole Morris Haigler (Dexter) and Christopher George Morris (Natalie Rose Clapp). He is also survived by his sister, Hope Morris Florence and her children, Margaret Anne Florence Siachos (Peter) and John Quinton Florence (Tara), and her grandson, Quinton Terry Siachos. He has one surviving uncle, Dr. Peter C. Gazes (Athena). In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or Plato Chapter No. 4 Scholarship Fund c/o Bernard (Bernie) Ferrara, 1046 Plantation Lane, Mt. Like a song that remains in the heart when the music is playing no more, Like a fragrance that stays in the air where a flower has blossomed before, Like a star that continues to glow long after the breaking of dawn, The ones we have loved remains with us still, and the beautiful memories go on. May you find comfort, strength, and peace in the knowledge that love is eternal. With our deepest sympathy and love, Olin F. Williams and Russell F. Bennett.

George hired me straight out of law school in 1985. Taught me to practice law and how to be a gentleman lawyer. I owe all my training and success to him for the lawyer I am today. At the same time he was a good friend to me and got me more involved in our church. I cannot thank him enough for the influence he has had on my life in so many respects. What a great man. You will be missed by many, the legal world, the church, AHEPHA and most of all by friends and family. May his memory be eternal.
