George McElveen Obituary

McELVEEN, III, George CHARLOTTE, NC - Mr. McElveen, of Charlotte NC peacefully passed way on November 26th, 2007 at his home after a courageous and inspiring battle with cancer. He was born in Florence, S.C. October 27th, 1948 and remained in South Carolina after receiving his Bachelors of Arts from the University of South Carolina. Mr. McElveen and family moved to Charlotte in 1981 where he was the office manager for Harris Upham and eventually a managing director of Smith Barney Harris Upham. In 1990 he joined Interstate Johnson Lane as Senior Vice President and then became the Chairman and CEO of Sovereign. He returned to Smith Barney in 1998 where he oversaw the expansion of the national retail brokerage. Mr. McElveen is also the founder and General Partner of Springbank Capital, LLC a hedge fund he named after his family's plantation in Kingstree, S.C. Mr. McElveen's accomplishments were not limited to his professional work and it is difficult to separate Mr. McElveen and worldwide amateur golf. He served on many charitable boards such as the Ernest L. Ransome, III Scholarship Programme at the University of Saint Andrews, Scotland. He began his own endowment, named for his mother Ethel Leona Plowden McElveen, for a Scottish resident to attend the university. More recently, through efforts of the University, friends and family, a scholarship for a North or South Carolina resident to attend the University has been created in his name. He was extremely active with the USGA serving as a member of the Library and Museum committee. Mr. McElveen is survived by his wife Mary Olliff McElveen and their children. Terah McElveen Polite and husband Joseph Frank Polite, Jr., G. Ashby McElveen IV and Priscilla Plowden McElveen, as well as his grandchildren: Mary-Kirwin Plowden Polite, Cecilia Warthen Polite, and Joseph Jay Frank Polite, III. Mr. McElveen is also survived by his dear friend and confidante, Stephanie Holmes, as well as numerous friends in Charlotte, across the country and overseas. A private family graveside service will be held in Kingstree S.C. on Friday November 30th. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 28th from 4pm to 7pm in Charlotte at Mr. McElveen's personal residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The University of Saint Andrews for the benefit of the George A. McElveen III Scholarship and can be sent to 4201 Congress Street, Ste 175, Charlotte NC 28209. WILLIAMSBURG FUNERAL HOME OF KINGSTREE is assisting the McElveen family with arrangements. I regret that I never had the opportunity to meet George's family. I grew up with George in Kingstree, SC. We knew each other from kindergarten. I agree that golf with George was a special event. As a playing partner through high school I was with George when he got his first set of pro clubs "Arnold Palmers". Not only was George gifted as a golfer, he was a gifted human being who followed his own star.

Dear Ashby - the sad news reached St Andrews very quickly and I also heard of your sad loss from Cathy Tolman. Just to let you know that I'm thinking of you and your family. St Andrews University mourns for you all but lives on in your father's memory.

George was a great person. Funny, quick witted and in the face of seemingly dire circumstances, both brave and irreverent. I didn't know him well, but he definately left an impression. I am saddened at his passing. He fought a good fight.

Although I never met George personally, his daughter Priscilla and my daughter Kim have remained best friends since high school; Priscilla is considered an addition to my family. Kim always had such wonderful things to say about George, whom she cared for very much. Our very deepest sympathy, love and hugs to you, Priscilla, and to your family.

Love always,
