George Lawley Obituary

George Glenn Lawley CHARLESTON - George Glenn Lawley, beloved husband of Sue Bearden Lawley, entered into eternal rest at his home on November 18, 2023 with his wife by him. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 1 p.m. with visitation prior to the service from 12 noon at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, James Island, SC. Glenn was born April 21, 1941 in Pensacola, Florida. He was the son of J. D. and Mae Lawley, both of whom predeceased him. Glenn retired from the Naval Weapons Station, Charleston, in 1996 as the Executive Director. He was promoted to this position in 1988. Prior to this, he was the Director of Data Processing from February 1985 until his promotion to Executive Director. Glenn began his federal service in 1959 at Mobile, AL as a GS-2 clerk Typist working with the Air Force. In 1965, he transferred to the Naval Supply Center and in 1966, he went to the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a computer operator. From 1974-1977, he was Head of the Management Information Branch at the Mine Warfare Training Center on the Naval Base. He returned to the Charleston Naval Shipyard from 1977-1985, when he transferred to the Naval Weapons Station as Supervisory Computer Specialist. Throughout his career he received many awards and accolades, which included the Navy Superior Civilian Award, the highest award presented to a Civilian by the Navy for his technical expertise in Naval Ordnance and his assistance in the redesign of the ordnance organization. His innovative concepts were included in the redesign of the Naval Ordnance Center's organizational structure. Glenn served in the Air Force Active Reserve from 1963-1969 with the 908th Troop Carrier Group at Bates Field, Mobile, Alabama and Headquarters 437th Military Airlift Wing Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina. Glenn graduated in June 1959 from Theodore High School in Theodore, Alabama. Glenn was a simple, fun loving man who has always made friends easily and enjoyed them as family. Growing up in Key West and Pensacola and for the last 58 years in Charleston he has loved boating, fishing and the many other pleasures offered on the water. In his younger years, he was also an avid golfer and bowler. He accrued many golf and bowling trophies and bowled many perfect games of 300. Glenn is survived by his loving wife, Sue of 58 years and his precious dog, Bella. In addition, he considered his extended family as his own, which includes Patricia Bordelon, his sister-in-law, D.C. Bearden (Edwina) and Roy Owen Bearden (Laura), his brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
