The Right Reverend George Edward Haynsworth JAMES ISLAND - Funeral services for The Right Reverend George Edward Haynsworth, 90, of James Island, will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden. Celebrating will be Bishop Lawrence and eulogy by Bishop Allison. Following the service there will be a reception at Bishop Gadsden. Burial will follow at the Church of the Holy Cross in Stateburg at 3:30 p.m., SC, 335 North Kings Hwy, Sumter, SC 29154. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 27, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC. Bishop George Edward Haynsworth, husband of Elizabeth (Babbie) Veronee Haynsworth, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2012. Born in Sumter, SC, October 25,1922, he is the son of the late Joseph Herbert Haynsworth and Katherine Rees Sumter. Bishop Haynsworth began college at the Citadel in 1940 but was called into active duty during WWII. Upon returning from the war he graduated from the Citadel, Class of 1944. While attending Sewanee: University of the South he spent his summers as a counselor at Camp St. Christopher where he met his wife, Babbie, who was the camp nurse. He received his theological degree from the University of the South in 1949. He was ordained a priest in 1950. He served as a priest in SC and Savannah, GA. In 1960, led to serve as a missionary in Central America he ministered to the people of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. He was ordained bishop of Nicaragua and El Salvador in 1968. Upon returning to the States he served as the Presiding Bishop Executive for Latin America in New York. He was called to become Assistant Bishop of South Carolina in 1980. Several years after retirement, he and Babbie settled at Bishop Gadsden. Bishop Haynsworth was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved the Lord and spent his life humbly serving and spreading God's word throughout the world. Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Babbie, and his sons George E. Haynsworth Jr. of Johns Island, SC, Richard D. Haynsworth (Nancy) of James Island, SC, Stephen A. Haynsworth (Cindy) of Johns Island, SC; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, the Anglican Communion Development Committee (ACDC), PO Box 20127, Charleston, SC 29413.
