I worked for SGT Haltiwanger at the Naval Base Police when I first came to Charleston in 1974. I learned a lot from George. He always gave good counsel. He was a straight up guy and you could always tell where he was coming from. He was definitely a long time first class boatswain's mate, and you knew he was in charge. He had a firm hand and no tolerance for BS. Also, he didn't suffer idiots. He worked hard and ensured you did also. His uniform was always immaculate and he believed strongly in the individual's responsibility for their professional development. To sum it up, George was typical of the greatest (WWII) generation. They don't make them like him any more. He will be missed. Rest well friend! You have earned it! God bless the family and friends.

Some of my fond memories of the Navy Base involve George. If you never saw him dance, you missed something! Farewell George, and God's peace to your family.
