George Evans Obituary

George Rawling Evans WADMALAW ISLAND- It is with great sadness that the family of George Rawling Evans, 53, announces his passing on January 11, 2023. Since June of 2022, George fought a courageous battle against multiple myeloma, undergoing stem cell transplantation at MD Anderson at the time of his death. George was a lifelong Charlestonian, and in recent years lived on Wadmalaw Island, his favorite place on earth. He was a graduate of Christ School (Arden) and the University of South Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Laura (Johnson), his parents, George and Mary Porcher Evans, his sister, Caroline Johnson (Harry), and a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, a niece, two nephews, and godchildren. He was the owner of Appraisal Group of Charleston, a residential appraisal firm. Despite his weekly promise to "never play again", George was a passionate golfer and loved his weekend rounds at the Muni with the Dream Team. He was an avid Gamecock football fan, though admittedly it was a love-hate relationship almost every season. He could quote entire episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and tell what year the episode was filmed by the opening whistle. While he adored travel, he was happiest in the boat on the Leadenwah, the Bohicket and the North Edisto, fishing or spotting and identifying all manner of marine life and birds. He did not think life was complete without dogs underfoot and loved many over his lifetime. To know George was to love him. He touched so many over his too short lifetime. It never failed that he knew someone everywhere he went. He had an infectious laugh, a devotion to his family and friends, and a truly generous spirit. The family will receive friends at a casual gathering on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Sea Island Yacht Club, Rockville, South Carolina. Due to limited parking, carpooling is encouraged. At a later date, there will be a private graveside service at the St. Philips Church cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Donations in his honor may be made to the Lowcountry Chapter of The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society's Man of the Year campaign (Joe Riley, III) or the charity of your choice. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

I am deeply saddened to hear about George. I have never met anyone who was nicer than him. I remember when George came home from school and needed clothes when I worked at Jack Krawcheck. For some reason, the power was off but George showed up and we had a good time in spite of the candlelight. We joked and said that it was a good day for a "dark suit". Later, I had the privilege to be with George in the Charleston Rotary Breakfast Club. George served our community and was a pleasure to all who knew him. Please know that the Evans family is in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Though I haven't seen him in too many years, George has always had a special place in my heart from our years at Charleston Day. As a child, I renamed Lake George in Jacksonville, Fla. (along I-95), "Lake George Evans"... and still think of it that way, today. I am so sorry to learn of his passing. The light is a bit dimmer without his happy spirit. Condolences to all of his family. Rest in Peace.

Deepest condolences to George's family.
Life seems so short sometimes.
Spent a few years at "Jesus Tech", er... Christ School together... gentle, gracious and open spirit.
What times!
Thanks and Rest in Peace George.

George was my best friend growing up at Charleston Day and on the Leadenwah. I am so grateful to have known him, his humor was infectious. His optimism was boundless and I will miss my brother.
