George Colbert Obituary

George Ashley Colbert, Jr., MD TAMPA, FL - George Ashley Colbert, Jr., MD, passed away February 20, 2013 at home surrounded by his children and beloved cat Winston. He was born July 6, 1936 in Georgetown, SC. He was preceded in death by his father George A Colbert Sr, his mother Mary Virginia Boatwright, sister Virginia Ford and son George A. Colbert, III. Survivors include his sister Jill Caviness, his children Sherri (Bruce) McClendon, Cameron (Sean) McKinney and Brian Colbert; grandchildren Hunter, Callie Alexis, Kendall and Taylor; and many nieces and nephews. George received his medical degrees in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology, Pharmaceutics and General Surgery at the Medical College of South Carolina. He did his residency at Tampa General and was the Chief Pathologist at Memorial Hospital for 30 years. Born, raised and educated in the low country of South Carolina, he was the epitome of a southern gentleman. With his quick wit, slow slew footed saunter, and smiling eyes he found the best in his many long time friendships. Those who knew and love "The Geechie from South Carolina" aka Dr. CRS can attest to the fact that his handshake and word meant true commitment. His passions for play time..hunting, fishing, golf, history and Bear Bryant..where the coach is probably waiting on the sidelines for a little help from the "Doc". Anyone who spent time with him was sure to be tagged with one of his famous clever nicknames. His family request that you write down a story or 2 so they can continue to share his "Popisms" for future generations to enjoy. Visitation will take place on Sun. Feb. 24th from 6-8 pm at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Ave in Tampa. Burial services will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Georgetown, SC Tuesday Feb 26th at 3 pm. Doc,
You will always be remembered at the range. You had a great if sometimes weird sense of Humor and the messiest car trunk I have ever seen. It's not often you meet someone like you and I enjoyed all our time at the range. You will be missed.
