Married for 63 years, George and Betty could frequently be seen around the island, riding their bikes, taking walks along the beach, and serving in many roles at the Isle of Palms First Methodist Church. Mr. Chaconas was a forester for Georgia Pacific, a volunteer fireman, alderman, and an active member of his church. When he and Betty moved to Columbia in 2003, they joined Bethel United Methodist Church. George was an avid sports fan and USC Gamecocks supporter. Survivors include his daughter, Carol Chaconas Truslow; son-in-law, Douglas Neal Truslow; three grandchildren, Chloe Truslow Shafer (Judd), Jean Truslow Morgan (Robert), and Neal Douglas Truslow (Lauren); and great-grandchildren, Clarabelle, Stuart, Will, Charlotte, and Peyton. Memories and Condolences
for George Chaconas

Not sure what to say?

August 12, 2014

Dear George's Family,
Our heartfelt condolences for your tremendous loss. Truly, George was an inspiration to all that knew him. And, it was an honor to have him in our lives for the past 3 years. George's quiet demeanor, intellect, big wide grin, sense of humor, and "healthy" appetite were an inspiration to us all. We cherish the many times that we dined with George, and will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with you during this time.
With love,
Toby Lourie & Larraine & Jeff Moses

Dear Carol,

It is with deep sympathy that I write you about the death of your father. Please offer my condolences to your family as well. Your dad was a wonderful man - such a treasure! I have so many fond memories of him, and your mom from living on, and visiting the IOP. I remember when we lived there, he used to sing "Cindy, Oh, Cindy" to me every time he saw me. I can't hear that old song without thinking of him! I hope your happy memories will help you during this difficult time.

With love and peace,

Gretchen Fifer

Carol and Family, I was saddened to read of your dad's death. I have wonderful memories of your dad and mother as we grew up on the Isle of Palms in the 50's and 60'. With their warm smiles and generous natures, they exemplified the true Christian spirit. God's peace to you, Martha Capper Sparwasser

Carol Lynn, It is with a heavy heart that I see the passing of your father. Your family was so close to us and I have o many fond memories of staying on 21st St after moving to James Island. George and "Snowy" we like my second parents and living on IoP was like paradise! Snakes, wild Turkey's, and Horned Toads made it so magical. We were blessed have the Methodist church and great neighbors to look out for us. With your Dad's passing and Henry Shaffers too it's just not the same. God bless you and your family during this difficult time. Lane Aspinwall I'm sure George has found a nice section of beach to ride his bike on! LOL!

We are so sorry about the death of Mr. Chaconas. We thank him for his service to our country, fighting to rid our world of tyranny, cruelty and injustice. We owe so much to "The Greatest Generation". We hope and pray that family and loved ones will find strength and comfort in your faith and your memories.

My father John H. Smith Sr. worked with Mr. George many years ago in the forestry and logging businesses respectively. My father always spoke highly of him and considered him as an honest friend and good man...Condolences.

George was "THE MAIN MAN" and the most influential person in my life for the last 33 years. George and his beloved wife, Betty C, welcomed me into their home and hearts in August of 1981. George and Betty C treated me like their son rather than a long lost cousin. I will always be thankful for their hospitality, friendship, and genuine Christian witness of unconditional love. It was often said by family and friends that George did not have a mean bone in his body. His head and heart exceeded the Biblical knowledge and practical life application of any gifted and compassionate pastor that I have ever known. Though he did not prefer to refered to as a saint, there is no doubt that Betty and George are among the saints that have gone on before us. Our momentary loss is the Kingdom of Heaven's eternal gain.
