George Barber Obituary

George Allen Barber HANAHAN - George Allen Barber, 78, of Hanahan, S.C., entered into eternal rest July 26, 2014, with his family by his side. He was born to George Brenneisen Barber and Margaret Adaline Haney, January 7, 1936, in Stroudsburg, Pa. He married Joan Ann Kissner on September 5, 1959. They lived primarily in Charleston, S.C. and had three children together before her death on March 26, 1974. He remarried to Donna Mundkowski Rochester on July 4, 1981, forming a new family with seven children. George and Donna have been married 33 years. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 in Divine Redeemer Catholic Church at 12:00 pm. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 28, 2014 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Rd., from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with vigil and rosary beginning at 6:00 pm. George graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1954 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Fiske, USS Carp, USS Casimir Pulaski, USS John C. Calhoun, and USS Ethan Allen. While serving on the USS John C. Calhoun he participated in the only complete operational test of a submarine launched, nuclear-armed Polaris missile in May 1962. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer after nearly 23 years of service on August 30, 1977. After his military retirement, George worked for ManTech International and for Rosenblatt & Associates as a technical writer specializing in naval equipment. He was a facility and equipment maintenance superintendent with George C. Sharpe and the Defense Accounting & Finance Service. He was recognized as the Charleston Area Federal Employee of the Year for 2002. He retired in January 2008. Throughout his life, George was a member of many organizations providing service to the community. He was a faithful member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church serving as a Eucharistic Minister since 1981. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Donald J. Godfrey Council, serving as Grand Knight in 2004 - 2005, and the Msgr. Richard C. Madden Council, serving as Past Faithful Navigator in 1992 - 1993. He was awarded the Knights of Columbus South Carolina State Council Patriotism Award for 1997 and the Golden Knight of the Year for 1993. He was a member of the "40 Days for Life" pro-life organization providing leadership since 2008, and served as the Charleston Area Director in 2008. He was also a member of American Legion Post 0166, regular donor to the American Red Cross and enjoyed activities with the Summerville Sam's Camping Club. George is survived by his wife Donna Rochester Barber; his children: Dianne Barber Saltzman, George Allen Barber Jr., and Thomas Lee Barber; his step-children: Cory Wayne Rochester, Tracy Lynn Wentworth, Sandra Marie Rochester, and Terry Scott Rochester; their spouses, 12 grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and his sister, Ellanore Barber Freeman. George was always working with his hands, able to repair nearly anything and especially enjoyed working on cars. He had a mischievous grin and a sparkle in this eye for anyone he cared for and loved. George is remembered by many for his warm, giving heart, especially to those most vulnerable: the unborn. He was a friend with a listening heart, ready to offer help. He had a prayerful heart, in which family and friends take comfort in knowing he acts as an intercessor still. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus Council 6726, Henry E. Brown Jr. Blvd., Goose Creek, SC 29445 and/ or 40 Days for Life, 1511 South Texas Ave #335, College Station, TX 77840 and/ or the Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, 1106 Fort Drive, Hanahan, SC 29410. We knew Allen and Donna as good neighbors for 14 years. They loved to travel and would share their experiences with us. Their love for each other, their family, their church, friends and neighbors was visible with smiles and kindness. We want to express our sympathy to Donna, their children, grandchildren, great grandchild and Allen's sister. We recognize their deep loss. Allen made a positive impact on our lives that we will never forget.

To Donna and all of Chief Barber's family and friends; on behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI) please accept our sincere condolences in this time of loss and mourning. Our prayer is that God will bless you with peace, comfort you, and heal your broken hearts. We are especially thankful for George's service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service during the Cold War on the destroyer USS Fiske DD/DDR-842 and submarines USS Carp SS-338 FT2 1959-60, USS Ethan Allen SSBN/SSN-608 FT1(SS) 1960-62. USS John C Calhoun SSBN-630 FT1(SS) 1963. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” we say … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."

So, heavenly Father add his name to the roll
Of our departed shipmates still on patrol.
Let them know that we who survive
Will always keep their memories alive.

Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be!
Protect each one, we ask of Thee.

Bless those at home who wait and pray
For their return by night and day.

In the too short time I got to know George, he became a good friend. His easy nature, welcoming smile and his joyful giving of his time and talent to help others is what one remembers of George. He was a true follower of Christ, who has been called home too soon for the rest of us. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let Your perpetual light shine upon him.
