George Bamberg Obituary

George Hammond Bamberg III AWENDAW, SC - George Hammond Bamberg III, 74, of Awendaw, South Carolina, entered eternal rest on Sunday, September 21, 2025. He was married to his loving wife of many years, Helen Mahoney Bamberg. Services are scheduled for Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at St. Andrews Church in Mount Pleasant, with interment at Magnolia Cemetery immediately following the service. A festive celebration of life will be announced soon. Hammond was born on August 3, 1951, in Winnsboro, South Carolina, to the late George Hammond Bamberg Jr. and Joan Cauthen Bamberg. He attended Moultrie High School, Wofford College and graduated from The University of South Carolina. After college, he worked for the Charleston County Assessor's Office. He later became a long-time partner with Atlantic Appraisals in Mount Pleasant, SC. He was a noted person in the Property Appraisal Community, well known and respected for him many years of service and leadership. Hammond was a great father, instructor and role model for many. He set an example through his character, work ethic, strong morals, and sportsmanship. An avid outdoorsman who loved golf, fishing, water skiing, competitive sailing, and general competition. He was a member of the 1969 Moultrie High School state championship Track & Field Team! A very early advocate and participant of the local surfing community, he was involved in the development of this part of our culture. He was a member of the Oakland Sports Club, the Carolina Yacht Club, the Charleston Club, Yeaman's Hall Country Club, Sertoma and other Civic Organizations. His home away from home was his family's cabin at Lake Lure, NC. He had many great adventures with friends going to The Master's. Hammond is also survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Porcher (Shay) Bamberg of Awendaw, SC, and his sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Bamberg of Mount Pleasant, SC. He had many very close nephews and nieces with a special love for Ian McKenzie (Heidi), and Andrew McKenzie who they raised. Also, nephews, Peter McKenzie (Leigh), Timothy Mahoney (Katie), Charles Gambrell and Lawrence Collins (Sarah). His nieces include Katie Carter (Marcus), Sarah Gambrell, and Lisa Sharpe (Bill) and many loving great-nieces, nephews and second cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Terrell (Terri) Bamberg. The family wishes to thank everyone for all their love, prayers and support during Hammond's illness. So sad that our dear Lake Friend has left us before we could meet again after lake restoration. Hammond so loved this place and we loved spending time with him there. It won´t be the same without him. Hopefully, Hammond is enjoying that lake sunset in the Great Beyond.
