Geneva Crooks Obituary

Geneva C. Crooks CHARLESTON, SC - Geneva C. Crooks, widow of Dan Fitzpatrick Crooks, entered into Eternal Rest the evening of August 6, 2010. Mrs. Crooks was born May 6, 1919, in Estill, South Carolina, the daughter of Bertha Hartley Crosby and Alfred Dowling Crosby. During the Second World War she was a ticket agent for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, and later had many stories to tell about the soldiers, sailors and marines who passed through her office in the basement of the Francis Marion Hotel. She recalled the names of some whom she later found in the daily casualty list. After the war she remained with the railroad, eventually meeting a handsome Irishman from New York. They were wed in 1950 at St. John's Catholic Church, but the union would be brief as her husband Dan died suddenly in 1957. After devoting time to raise her only child, Mrs. Crooks returned to work at the former Margaurites Fashion Shoppe in St. Andrews Center. Wanting to downsize her lifestyle, Geneva moved into the Canterbury House in 1982, where she worked as the receptionist for almost twenty years. Her health failing, she joined the other wonderful ladies at the Carter May Catholic Home in West Ashley, but a tragic fall left her incapacitated until death. She is survived by a son, Danny Crooks and his wife Lynn, and two grandchildren, Daniel Crooks of Charleston, and Leah Crooks of Columbus, Ohio. Mrs. Crooks brother, Jack H. Crosby, and his wife Cindy, reside in Plano, Texas. All services will be private. The family requests memorials be made to the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, P. O. Box 21833, Charleston, SC 29413. Online condolences may be sent to Mrs. Crooks family via mcalister-smith.com. Arrangements being handled by MCALISTER-SMITH MT. PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1520 RIFLE RANGE ROAD (843) 884-3833. My sincere & deepest sympathies to the family of Danny & Lynn Crooks for the loss of Danny's Mother, Geneva C. Crooks. Although I did not know her personally, I'm sure she was a lovely and wonderful lady, judging from all that I have heard & read over the years. I know she will be missed by all of her family and friends. God Bless.......Speros Drake

Danny,
Claudia and I were saddened to learn of your mom's passing. She was blessed with a long life and we were blessed to have her as a part of our family. I have a lot of wonderful memories when you and I were kids playing together with her watching over us. I can just see her now with Uncle Dan and Mom and Dad talking about the old days at Yeamans Hall. She was a lovely and wonderful lady.
