SEMPERFIDELIS Marine RIP
Brett Mueller
January 25, 2020
Gary was one of my favorite people in the Port of Charleston. So kind, intelligent, always ready with a smile, and never met a convention or cliché he wouldn't challenge in conversation. His genuine curiosity about things and people seemed endless, and must have required a lot of energy, but that never seemed to stop him. I always knew when I asked him a question I'd get a thoughtful and, whenever possible, deeply researched answer. He was one of a kind, and I miss him.

From one soldier to another soldier, may you RIP and know that the times we worked together was always a positive experience. Like the days of the VEC training classes, you always kept the room in stitches. Your advise and expertise really helped me on my TDYs to the Southern Border. You will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to work with you and be your friend. My prayers and thoughts are will your family now and in the days to come. Airborne Ranger/Semper Fi

I will miss all your crazy stories, attention to detail/research, your ability to fix my computer when you should have been writing code and hours spent talking about the most important thing in your life- April and the boys! The best 3 years as a supervisor throughout my career was spent with these 3 K9 teams. You made work fun!! Thank you for your service to your local community and our country! You left way too soon. We will all miss you!!

Gary and I went to school together in elementary and middle school before I moved to FL. He was always one of the most open, honest, upstanding and fun loving people I have ever known. We spent some time together as young adults and his core personality never changed. Condolences to his family; truly a great loss. My heart breaks for all who knew this great person.

Always good for a laugh, interesting conversation and someone who always made you feel welcomed. I join with everyone who will miss and hope to see you again someday. God bless my friend.

Gary was a very positive individual. Through Desert Shield/Storm, many reserve exercises and activities, he could always be counted on to provide a laugh or support. Given his life of service (USMCR and Civilian), I expect he will continue that service by guarding Heaven's streets with many other great Marines before him. To the family, I send my heartfelt sympathy. Good souls like Cross (Gary) are too few and far between. Semper Fi!

Sending prayers for April and Gary's entire family. It seems like yesterday that we were all headed to Desert Shield/Storm with Roanoke's finest which included Gary. He had a great personality, was very intelligent, and an outstanding teammate to all. He served our unit well and is/was a fine Marine whom everyone liked. I was fortunate to be his Platoon Commander. On behalf of a grateful nation, all Marines, Sailors and Soldiers that he served with, it is an honor to say thank you for all your dedicated selfless service and godspeed as you have entered Heavens gates. To Parker and Spencer, your father was a great man and I hope to meet you all one day to shake your hands and personally express my condolences.
Until we meet again, Semper Fidelis, Marine.

What I will remember most about Gary is how he not only loved to talk, but would take delight in testing others' vocabulary. He always said that he enjoyed our conversations because I could not only keep up with him, but occasionally even offer a bit of a challenge. He was one of a kind and I will miss him dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with April and the boys. God speed, Gary.

January 19, 2020
On January 15, 2020, a young man took his last breath in the presence of the people he loved most in this world and who returned that love to him. His passing will not be a newspaper story or a a television news headline. He was not a politician, industry mogul, movie star or athlete. He was Gary Allen Cross, a United States Marine who saw foreign service, a police officer, U.S. Border Patrol Agent and Customs K9 Officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He served America, his community, his family and all of us his whole adult life. Dear God, please continue to replace such truly wonderful people who leave our ranks with more similarly wonderful people.
Whenever I become aware that another Marine has answered his last muster, I am reminded by words in our Marines Hymn that tells us, the streets of Heaven are guarded by United States Marines. Stack arms and rest your pack, Marine, and then take your new post. You still have important work to do. Semper Fi, and carry on. Another Marine

I met Garry in 1990 at Radford University. We were 19 years old. He was my little brother when he pledged our fraternity, Kappa Delta Rho. After he deployed with the Marines to Desert Storm, we were roommates for a year. Partly because of Gary's influence, after I graduated Radford, I joined Marines and also served in the Persian Gulf. Gary is and was great friend, a fellow Marine, roommate, and brother to me. He will be missed dearly. I know that I am a better man today for having known him.
