Gary Banks Obituary

BANKS, JR., Gary Gary Clark Banks, Jr., 73, of Summerville, SC, a former partner and retired executive of Banks Construction Company, died Monday afternoon. Funeral services will be at 11:00 o'clock, Wednesday, August 8th, 2007, at Bethany United Methodist Church, Summerville, with the Reverend Dr. Robert J. Howell, Jr. and Reverend F. David Mills officiating, directed by Parks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cypress United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Banks was born July 30, 1934 in Charleston, SC, a son of the late Gary C. and Fannie Salisbury Banks. He graduated from Summerville High School and The University of South Carolina with a degree in economics. He served in the South Carolina Air Force National Guard before embarking on his career at Banks Construction Company, where he worked for over forty years and continued to serve on its board of directors. Mr. Banks also gave his time and resources to the community in which he lived. He and his wife established the We've Been Blessed Fund to benefit local charities. He served on the board of First Financial Holdings and First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Charleston since 1987. He was also currently serving on the SCANA Corporation Advisory Committee of Summerville, as well as other community interest groups. He was a long standing and committed member of Bethany United Methodist Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. He is a former director of the Coastal Community Foundation, former board member of the South Carolina Golf Association, the Roper Foundation Board of Development, the USC Educational Foundation, Spoletto Festival, USA, and the Parks and Playground Commission of Summerville. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Janie Robinson Banks, children Gary C. (Trey) Banks III and wife Rhonda, G. Reid Banks and wife Jennie, Swain Banks Marion and husband Robby, grandchildren Clark Banks, Collins Banks, Blake Banks, Elizabeth Walker Marion, Hope Banks, Banks Marion, Davis Banks, and Reid Marion, brothers Ronald S. Banks and James M. Banks, and sister Ann B. Weston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Coastal Community Foundation We've Been Blessed Fund 90 Mary Street, Charleston, SC 29403, or Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 West 3rd South Street, Summerville, SC 29483. Family and friends are invited to call from 6:00 until 8:00 this Tuesday evening at PARKS FUNERAL HOME, 130 West 1st. North Street, Summerville SC, 843-873-3440.
