Gaither West Obituary

Gaither Glennis (Glen) West II GOOSE CREEK - Gaither Glennis West II (Glen), 82, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, passed away on June 27, 2023. Glen was born in Evansville, IN to Gaither Glennis West, Sr. and Bernadine Long West. He is survived by: his wife, Elfriede Elisabeth (Hoelzchen) West; his sons, Gaither Glennis (Glen) West III (Diane Beebe) and Scott Wilhelm West (Dana Smith). His grandchildren, Dillion Glenn West (Natalie), Travis Allen West, Collin Davis West and Lydia Elisabeth West. His great-grandson, Theodore Matthias West. Also, one sister, Bettina Haltiwanger, one brother, John G. West and several nephews and nieces. Glen is preceded in death by his parents: Gaither Glennis West, Sr. and Bernadine Long West; also, his brother, Donald West. Glen grew up in the farmlands around Evansville, IN. After graduating from Selvin High School, he joined the United States Army to see the world. Glen was a Vietnam Era Veteran. He served our country in Germany during the height of the Cold War, where he met and married the love of his life, Elfriede, while stationed in Frankfurt. After leaving Army life, they settled in Goose Creek, SC to be near friends. There they raised their sons, Glenn and Scott, coaching baseball and football during their formative years. He was gainfully employed at General Electric, US Post Office and as an independent Tax Practitioner. He was a lifelong avid reader, with special interests in SC History. Consistent with this interest, Glen and Elfriede enjoyed expanding their knowledge by seeking sights around the Low Country to explore. Aside from this interest, Glen loved to watch his grandchildren and others who affectionately called him Opa perform in recitals, sports matches, beauty pageants, band and chorus performances. He loved his family and friends dearly and always made time to nurture and maintain these relationships. He was a quick wit and was swift to lend a helping hand or word of advice to anyone who asked; especially, the underdog. Glen aka Dad, Opa, Friend will be immensely missed. A Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Carolina Memorial Funerals & Cremation, 7113 Rivers Ave., North Charleston, SC 29406.
