Gail Wilson Obituary

Gail Wilson MT. PLEASANT - Gail Hamby Wilson, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025. She was known and loved everywhere she went, touching the lives of many with her grace, kindness, and radiant spirit. Born on December 13, 1938, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Gail was the daughter of the late Margie Moody Hines and Fred Alfred Hamby. She met her husband, Harlan Euel Wilson, Jr., affectionately known as Bill, while she was at Spartanburg High School and he was at Wofford. Their love story began there, and they married on June 6, 1959, after Harlan's first year in seminary. Together, they shared over 66 years of love and devotion. Gail studied at Anderson University and Southern Wesleyan University. Throughout her career, she served as an executive secretary for banks and a law firm, demonstrating professionalism and dedication. Even after retirement, she continued to share her talents by working at Two Meeting Street Inn in downtown Charleston and regularly volunteering at East Cooper Meals on Wheels. As a Master Gardener, Gail volunteered at Clemson Extension. She found joy and great satisfaction in working in the soil, nurturing her plants in "Gail's Garden" with the same care she extended to everyone around her. She was also a passionate writer who enjoyed taking writing workshops and crafting short stories and poems reflecting her experiences in life. Gail was a proud mother to Cherie Wilson Blackburn and grandmother to William Arron Blackburn and Catherine Blackburn Fries. Her "grand-dogs," Moab, Chipper Jones, and Charlie, held a special place in her heart. Known affectionately as "Grandmommy" by her grandchildren and their friends, Gail had a unique ability to light up any room she entered, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the many lives she touched with her warmth and kindness. The family will hold a service to celebrate Gail's life on July 18, 2025, at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Charleston. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Cooper Meals on Wheels or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

My daughter, Morgan, and I were fortunate enough to spend a week with Gail and Harlan on a mission trip to Belize with John Wesley a number of years ago. It provided some of the best memories that still make me smile and it made us forever friends. It always made my heart happy to see Gail and Harlan in church on Sundays, always just one or two pews behind us. It took my breath away when I learned that I would never see her smile or feel her hand in mine again here on Earth. She will be so missed by everybody who knew and loved her. I am praying for her family as they adjust to life with her watching down on them from Heaven. Gail was such a special person who exuded the love of Christ to all she met.

I am one of Harlan's colleagues who came together for study and fellowship that led to Dr. of Ministry (dmin) degrees in 1991. But it was much more than that. We continued to gather almost annually as friends over these 30 plus years. Harlan and Gail exuded southern charm and personality. Gail was very dear to us. In recent years we have gathered monthly by zoom. When Gail couldn't be in the room she was very much missed. We love her and now celebrate her transition into the heavenly kingdom of God.

Gail welcomed us to John Wesley UMC in 2012 with a personal note. She was a kind and loving person and always asked how we were doing. She will be missed by many.

I first met Gail when I joined John Wesley Church. Over the next months, we became friends. Over the years I have treasured our friendship. I will never forget having Sunday lunch in a park in Mt. Pleasant with Gail and Harlan along with several others during Covid. When I moved back to my hometown, we stayed in touch. I will always remember her smiling face and loved our visits over the phone. I was shocked when she passed away suddenly. Harlan and Cherie, my heart breaks for your loss. She will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry to hear of Gail´s passing. Harlan and Gail usually sat in front of me and my family at church. She was always so lovely and kind to everyone. She will surely be missed.

What a very sad loss for all of us. Gail was an amazing human being who radiated joy and love and peace to everyone she encountered. She had such a giving and caring spirit, and I just don't think they make many like her. She leaves a beautiful imprint on the world, and it will take a while to adjust to how all those who loved her will carry on except by cherishing all the loving memories that she brought to so many and knowing that she is safe in God's hands. Sending prayers and love to the family at what I know is a difficult time
