I am heart broken at the loss of My Dear Friend Frieda. Some of my fondest memories of youth are shared with her in a big way. We were friends since our early teens and could tell some stories! She was that friend who would always be there for you with a smile, a plan or a shoulder to cry on. We shared many of those moments from crazy escapades to boy troubles. My very first home away from home was shared with Frieda in a little house in Hanahan not far from our parents. We thought this was a hugh deal to have this much independence. But we often mooched a meal at one or the other place and threw in a load of clothes to wash while we ate! We both loved our families and we loved each other's family as well.

While we were living together, Frieda decided to further her education by attending night school at Palmer College and I soon followed suit. Her enthusiasm for studying and making good grades influenced me into thinking that I could do the same even though I wasn't the most applied student in high school. A year later, I entered College of Charleston full-time to later graduate with a BA in Urban Studies. (I should mention that Frieda had a 4.0GPR which set the bar for me.) I always attribute this fork in my road to Frieda and I told her so. Even though we eventually went our separate ways, we never lost touch with each other. Never.

During the time I lived in Hilton Head, I would call Frieda when I came home for the holidays. (Her phone number was the same as when we lived together! An easy one to remember and probably the only one I know by heart other than my own!) I would come over to her house and we'd talk for hours catching up and remembering the Good Ol' Days. And if I was really lucky, we'd go over to her Momma's house and there would be some Mac & Cheese left for me to devour! When I came back to Charleston in 2001, we still kept in touch.

In 2009, there was a Hanahan High School reunion and a reunion of The Blue Mist (a popular rock band in our high school days). Frieda attended both and was radiant and excited to be reconnecting with old friends. We had so much fun remembering those times together and we looked forward to many more to come.

My sadness is that there will be no more opportunities to talk for hours about our families, our friends and our wonderful teen years together. But I will hold dear to those memories and seek them out any time I need to see Frieda again. I will miss you, My Dear Friend.
