Frederick Richard Koenig Awendaw, SC - Fredrick Richard Koenig, 88, of Awendaw, South Carolina, loving husband of Barbara Grudowski Hayes Koenig, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 26, 2022. His memorial service will be held Thursday, September 15, 2022, at St. Benedict Catholic Church Place at 11:00 am. Inurnment to follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Rd. The family will receive friends in St. Benedict's for a reception following inurnment. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Fredrick was born March 19, 1934, in Newark, New Jersey, son of the late Otto Frederich Koenig and Freda Wild Koenig. Fred was a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy. His career included tours on six submarines: USS Quillback, USS Marlin, USS Andrew Jackson, USS Trumpetfish, USS Nathaniel Green and USS ALexander Hamilton. Fred continued his career by joining Dupont in North Charleston and Delaware, retiring to become caregiver to his first wife, Elaine, as she battled a terminal illness. He was friend to all he met, never meeting a stranger and very much loved by his large family. He met and married Barbara and enjoyed 14 years as a country boy, tractor and all. He could fix anything. His illness broke our hearts, but he never lost faith. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Koenig, of Awendaw, SC; children, Dawn Marie Bennett of Charleston, SC, and Frederick Richard Koenig, II of Spartanburg, SC; stepchildren, Colleen Brignale of Danielson, CT, Barbara Lee Connor of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Stephen Q Hayes, IV of St. George, SC, Kevin Joseph Hayes of Huger, SC, Cynthia Brooks of Pittsburg, PA; 22 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Benedict Building Fund, 950 Darrell Creek Trail, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29466 or Roper Hospice Cottage, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 20464.
