Frederick Gibbs Obituary

Frederick Gibbs, Jr. YONGES ISLAND, SC - Frederick Leslie Gibbs, Jr., 78, of Yonges Island, SC, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023. Born on April 22, 1945, in Columbia, SC, Fred was the son of the late Frederick Leslie Gibbs, Sr. and Lillian Fortune Gibbs. Fred grew up near Jenkinsville, SC, before moving to Irmo where he graduated from Irmo High School. While at Irmo High School, Fred fondly remembered driving the school bus. After high school, Fred attended Newberry College before entering the United States Navy in the Seabee construction battalion, where he served in the Vietnam War. Upon returning from Vietnam, Fred met his wife, Brenda Vaughn Gibbs, and was married in 1972. Fred worked in the mechanical contracting industry before retiring and starting his own business in 2003. During his life, Fred was a loyal husband and caregiver to Brenda; a devoted father to his children, Leslie, Edward, and Pritchet; a doting grandfather to Lily, Charlotte and Catherine; and a wonderful brother, friend and neighbor. Fred served as a Mason and was a two-time Coastal President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of South Carolina. He was an avid bird hunter, fisherman and boating enthusiast, and he rarely missed a Rockville Regatta. He loved the Gamecocks during good and bad, was a proud member of the "Drifting and Drinking Club", loved his annual Oscar fishing trip to the Everglades with his buddies, and enjoyed entertaining and feeding friends and family weekly at his creek house on Friday nights. Surviving Fred are his wife, Brenda, of the home; sons, Frederick Leslie Gibbs, III, of Charleston and William Edward Gibbs (Emily), of Irmo; daughter, Pritchet Kay Gibbs (Bradley Hendricks), of Charleston; sister, Charlotte Vaughan Gibbs, of Aiken; granddaughters, Kathleen Lillian Gibbs of Walterboro and Charlotte Ruth and Catherine Pearl Gibbs of Irmo; as well as a number of wonderful friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Lillian. The family would like to invite Fred's friends and neighbors to a celebration of his life and dinner at the creek house at 6:00 pm on Friday, September 8, 2023, 4091 Tom Point Road, Meggett, SC 29449. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Leeza's Care Connection, www.leezascareconnection.org, 201 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210 or to the Hammer it Out Hustle, www.hammeritouthustle.com, 145 Manchester Rd., Charleston, SC 29407. It is with a heavy heart that I say to all of Freddie´s family how sorry I am to hear of my cousin´s passing. We had communicated through the computer several times in the past couple of years. He was a wonderful father and cousin. Charlotte, I know this is hard for you as y´all were so close. I pray that you are comforted and know how much my family hated to hear of this. If I can do anything, please let me know. He was a good man. I love you all.
