Fred Thompson Obituary

Fred E. Thompson, Sr. CHARLESTON - Fred Edward Thompson, Sr., 79, husband of the late Lois Ann Mathewes Thompson of Charleston, SC, passed away on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. The relatives and friends of Fred Thompson, Sr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Friday, December 18, 2009 in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Isle of Palms, SC at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The family will receive friends at the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Thursday, December 17, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Thompson was born April 11, 1930 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late John "Jack" Allen Thompson and Jennie Elease Brownlee Thompson. Fred attended James Simmons School, Rivers High School and graduated from the High School of Charleston. He attended Palmer College and then joined the United States Marine Corps at Parris Island. He was sent to boot camp in December 1950. He served as a Sergeant on the USS Leyte, fought in the Korean Conflict and saw time in the Mediterranean. He married Lois Ann Mathewes on June 18, 1965. He worked for the Charleston Police Department and the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was Chief of Police on the Isle of Palms from 1975 until 1989. He and Lois were avid shaggers. He was a member of the Charleston Rifle Club, Elks Club, Exchange Club and the Sportsmen's Club. He is survived by his four children, Fred Edward Thompson, Jr. and his wife Alicia, of Wadmalaw Island, SC, Robert Clifford Thompson of Charleston, SC, Gina Christine Thompson of Charleston, SC and April Elease Thompson of Charleston, SC. Fred is also survived by a number of "grand-animals." He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Ann Mathewes Thompson and his brother, Jack Allen Thompson, Jr. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. FRED AND I WERE VERY CLOSE FOR MANY, MANY YEARS,EVEN THOUGH I MOVED TO TEXAS 47 YRS. AGO. WE HAD SOME GREAT TIMES OVER THE YEARS. MY WIFE AND I WILL MISS HIM . WE LOVED FRED AND LOIS VERY MUCH. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY. LOVE EDDIE AND PATSY.
