Fred Scott Obituary

Fred Granville Scott, Jr. Mt. Pleasant - Fred Granville Scott, Jr., age 87, died peacefully at his home in Mount Pleasant the morning of December 26, 2018. He is survived, and sadly missed, by his loving wife, Patricia Musso Scott, his sister Adalia Scott Rhodes and her husband George Edward, his brother William Scott and his wife Donna; his four children and their families: Douglas Scott and his wife Patricia, W. Robert Scott and his children Silas and Shem, Elizabeth Scott McMillan, her husband John, and their children Ian, Peter, Marianna and Sarah, and Suzanne Scott McDowell and her children Robert and Mariah. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Robert Musso; sisters-in-law, Linda Koblyk and Katherine Tomlinson and their husbands Nick and Laurie; and by many beloved nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Charlotte Scott and by his sister, Janet Scott Allsbrook. Born in 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas, to Charlotte Housel Scott and Fred Granville Scott Sr., Fred moved with his family to Charleston in 1936 where he spent his childhood on St. Margaret Street in Wagener Terrace. He was steadfastly proud, and considered himself blessed, that he had the opportunity to live as a Charlestonian his whole life - often proclaiming himself "privileged to have played and grown up in Charleston in the Golden Years." Fred graduated from Charleston High School in 1949 and Clemson Agricultural College in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and a ROTC commission. He enlisted in the U. S. Army and was assigned to the 508th Army Airborne Regimental Combat Team stationed in Japan, serving as a Pathfinder Team Leader. In 1957 he was honorably discharged and returned home to join his father in the poultry business on Creekside Farm in Mt. Pleasant. In 1960, Fred married Patricia Ann Musso, affectionately known as "Pat". Together they raised a family of four children, growing with sons and daughters-in-law, and of course, grandchildren - each and every one, cherished by Fred. Fred and Pat celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary with family this past November. In 1967, at age 36, Fred enrolled in the University of South Carolina School of Law. He graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1970 and began his second career as a lawyer in Charleston County. His practice grew to include general and civil litigation and earned him a reputation as a passionate advocate for his clients. During these years, too, he partnered in the development of the Creekside Park subdivision - formerly the Creekside Farm - taking care to protect and permanently insure much of the natural beauty of the farm, unheard of in developer circles then. He also donated a parcel of the development to the Charleston Tennis Club, an asset to Mt. Pleasant and Charleston families since. In the late 1950's, Fred acting on his keen interest in politics, joined the nascent Republican Party in South Carolina. He ran for the State House of Representatives on the Republican ticket in 1966. He served as the Chairman of the Charleston Republican Party from 1968 to 1970, and on the State's Board of Social Services from 1976 to 1979. In 1978, for his contributions to South Carolina, Gov. James B. Edwards awarded him the Order of the Palmetto. In the 1950's Fred and his family had joined the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, and for years Fred was deeply involved in his church's life, serving as Sunday School teacher, Deacon and Ruling Elder. But Pat, over the years, missed the churches of her youth and Fred eventually joined her and became a member of the congregation of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke and St. Paul in downtown Charleston. There, too, he became active in the service of his church, in the men's fellowship within the church, on the Vestry, and later, as a Senior Warden. Yet Fred is perhaps best known, along with Pat, as founder and long-time proprietor of the Shem Creek restaurant known as "the Wreck of the Richard and Charlene". In 1992 at age 61 he started his third career, opening a restaurant that became part of an ongoing community - of working shrimpers and businesses, employees, and of course, his family, friends and customers. Supported by his unceasing love for his family and friends, Fred worked at The Wreck until he lost his sight three years ago. Despite his uniquely irascible personality, Fred embodied a zest for life that was contagious to Pat, his children, grandchildren and friends. He had a knack for making the simplest occasions memorable events. He was a lifelong student of history - continuous in his pursuit of new knowledge and education - and an ardent admirer of foods, cultures and adventures. He had a passion for horseback riding, sailing, and (before self-grounding for family priorities) flying, and he encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue their own. But his most indelible gift he gave his children was the example of a devoted husband to their mother to his very last breath. He will be remembered as a soft-hearted and generous son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, colleague, friend and Charlestonian, with a quick wit and a gift for one-liners that persisted throughout his life. Fred's family wants to thank a group we affectionately know as Fred's "earth-angels" who lovingly tended to and nursed him at home for the last five months of his life: Shante Lary, Antoinette Ladson, Jennifer Legare, Latoya Johnson, Crystal Pringle, Rosezena Brown, Patricia Johnson, Tasha Pepper, Valerie Washington, Latonia Stacey, Lisa Brown, Ron Robinson and Sharon Pease. We also want to thank Jennifer Parnell and Barbara Boyd, of the Hospice of Charleston, for their loving and unsurpassed professional care. The relatives and friends of Fred Granville Scott, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 5, 2019. Burial will follow at the graveside in Christ Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at J.HENRY STUHR, INC.,, MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 or the Cathedral Church of St.Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming Street, Charleston, SC 29403, or to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be offered at www.jhenrystuhr.com. I just recently learned of Fred's passing.
My most significant memory of Fred: he agreed to host a brunch at The Wreckon my wedding day in 1994. Fred and staff prepared a full blown Lowcountry meal that was the highlight of the weekend for my Dad and his friends. They talked for years about the meal, the restaurant, and Fred's kindness in opening up for us.
He was a kind man.
I pray for your peace.

Pat,
We are very sorry to here of Fred's passing. Our fond memories include the dinners he arranged for Cathedral members on the dock, men's breakfast on the dock after a shrimp boat cruise and the meals my Citadel classmates & I had at the Wreck. Rest in peace my friend.

Pat and childfren,
Although the years have seen too much distance between us and cherished folks we hold dear, Fred was one of the "giants" in our lives. His friendship and counsel in our younger years were so appreciated. I think he said our Summerville house was the easiest .. and the last, .closing he would do. Hard to believe that has been 23 years ago. The irony of his passing on the calendar day after his good friend, Jim's, passing brings a smile knowing that those two would be sharing an embrace in St. Peter's front yard! And probably riding horses together in God's meadows! A life incredibly well;lived ! Peace to you all!

May God comfort and bless Mr. Scott's family during this time. I met Mr. Scott 21 years ago as my family went to the Wreck on a hot July evening for dinner. Mr. Scott greeted us with a smile and handshake. He always made us welcome on each visit and the Wreck by far is the best seafood in all the southern states and through the Virgin Islands. Me. Scott will be greatly missed by all.

Fred Scott gave me the privilege of being one his egg boys at his farm. The memories of the Saturday BBQ, and the horse riding provided by Fred and his father were among the highlights of my youth. Many of us were blessed indeed to be included in Fred's life in once rural Mt. Pleasant. Fred will not be forgotten.

Very sorry to learn of the loss of Mr. Scott. My grandparents called him "Scooter". He was a unique lawyer who would spend time to make sure he knew the wishes of his clients. I never heard of him advocating a client or a witness lie in court. He was always thoughtful and caring. He was happy as a the owner of the Wreck and spent time with customers making sure they were happy with the great food and service. He is missed.

I was one of Egg Boys in my early teens. One of the highlights of my youth was a result of the Scott family. Saturday's at Creekside Farm was an extra benefit. Fred taught us all God's business skills as well developed a lifelong long love of horses and God's Creation.

Mrs. Scott, Doug, Robbie, Betsy, Susie, and all of your families, we are so very sorry for your loss during this difficult time. Mr. Scott was a great man who I have fond memories of him since I was a child growing up playing tennis at Creekside Tennis Club. I remember that he had a great intellect and wit, but he always made those around him feel good about themselves. I appreciate the legacy he has left behind in each of you. May God provide peace and comfort to each of you, and wrap his loving arms around your Dad.

My condolences to Pat and family and entire extended family. I have many treasured memories of Freddie at Shem Creek Farm. We lived there when Uncle Fred and Aunt Charlotte started the egg business and even though Freddie was a college man and Adalia and I were in grammer school, he was always kind and tolerant of us. I still see him riding his high spirited horse at top speed. Love, Sarah Jane
