Fred Funderburk Obituary

FUNDERBURK, JR., Fred

CPO Fred C. Funderburk, Jr., US Navy Ret., 80, and a retired boiler maker of Hanahan died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at a care facility in North Charleston. Born September 13, 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida, Fred was one of four children of Fred C. and Zelda (Clark) Funderburk. At the young age of 16, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the US Navy and joined our nation's fight in World War II. He remained in the military after the war ended and again saw action in the Korean War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He went to work as a boiler maker at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and later retired. Fred was a hard worker and dedicated father. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 51 years, Hazel Elizabeth (Childress) Funderburk, son and daughter-in-law Roger and Wendy Funderburk all of Hanahan, SC; two brothers: Norman Funderburk and wife Elma of Jacksonville, FL and Dorsey Funderburk and wife Dianne of Gastonia, NC; and sister Dorothy Murphy of Eulonia, GA. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 12noon Thursday, February 1, 2007 at Riverview Memorial Park, 3715 Azalea Drive, North Charleston. The family will receive friends prior to the service at MCALISTER-SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 100 S. Goose Creek Chapel, Goose Creek, from 10-11:00AM.
