Fred Davis Charleston - Fred Upper Davis, 80, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Loretta Diggs Davis entered into eternal rest Sunday, October 1, 2017. His funeral service will be held Thursday, October 5, 2017, in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road, James Island, SC. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel. Fred was born May 18, 1937 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Fred Upper Davis and Olivia Utsey Davis. He was a United States Marine Corp veteran and was a retired Environmental Health Supervisor for DHEC. Fred was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha's Gold Chapter and was also a member of the Charleston Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Loretta Diggs Davis; daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Davis Rose (John) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sons, Fred "Scooter" U. Davis, III and James "J.R." Richard Davis both of Charleston, SC; sister, Janice Olivia Moriarty (Bill) of Louisville, KY; brother, John Michael Davis (Lee) of Orlando, FL; and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406 and Palmetto Paws Animal Rescue, 976 Houston Northcutt Blvd. #D, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. I am very sorry to hear of Fred's death. I worked with Fred for several years at DHEC. I always enjoyed learning from him as well as just being around him. He will be greatly missed.

Fred was more than a cousin, more like a big brother when growing up in our teens years. I lived with Aunt Livy, Uncle Davis, Fred, Jam and Michael during a couple of summers while attending summer school at The Citadel. We all have a lot of fond memories the Utsey clan.

Uncle Fred was an iconic figure who loomed large in my childhood. I so loved going to the Davis house on James Island spend time Debbie, Scooter, JR, Aunt Loretta, and Uncle Fred.
