Fraser Wilson Obituary

WILSON, Fraser George Fraser Wilson, M.D., died Sunday, June 29, 2008. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service at St. Michael's Episcopal Church at 2:00 pm on Thursday, July 3rd. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. Dr. Wilson was born in Charleston on November 22, 1918, the son of George Fraser Wilson, M.D. of Wadamalaw Island and Charleston and Anne Aldridge Preston of Louden County, Virginia. His father Dr. Wilson, Sr., was professor of Obstetrics at the Medical College of South Carolina who established the department of Obstetrics at Roper Hospital and the Medical College of South Carolina. Dr. Wilson graduated from the College of Charleston in 1940. His class of 1943 of the Medical College of South Carolina was called into service six months prior to graduation. He graduated from the Medical College after completing his service to his country. Wilson served with the 5th Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater on the Caroline Islands, Eniwetok, Okinawa and finishing his service in occupied Japan. After the war, Dr. Wilson returned to Charleston and completed his residency at the Medical College of South Carolina. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology with Dr. Henry W. de Saussure and later established a practice with the late Dr. Watson Cordes Finger. Dr. Wilson belonged to the Medical Society of South Carolina, the Ob-Gyn Society of South Carolina, the College of Surgeons and the South-Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Wilson will be remembered for his love of antiques and his dedication to Charleston's history and material culture. He was a Life Trustee of Historic Charleston Foundation and opened his home for house tours for 39 years. Dr. Wilson was appointed to the South Carolina Governor's Mansion Commission by Governors James B. Edwards, Richard W. Riley, Carol Campbell, David M. Beasley, James Hodges, and Mark Sanford. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by the Governors for his exemplary service on the Commission He was a member of the Charleston Club, the South Carolina Society, the St. Andrew's Society, the St. Cecelia Society, the Agricultural Society and the Carolina Yacht Club. He was a member of St. Michael's church. On October 31, 1953, he married Adele Petigru Conner Simons, who died January 14, 2004. Dr. Wilson is survived by his son, Francis Preston Wilson and his wife, Chriss, of Charleston and George Fraser Wilson, Jr., of Charleston, a sister Harriet Wilson Garris of Coral Gables, Florida, and three grandchildren, Evelyn Allston Wilson, Christine Adele Wilson, and Preston Roby Vander Horst Wilson. His sister Margaret Wilson Davis and his brother Hugh Hamilton Wilson predeceased him. A daughter, Sallie Enders Simons Wilson predeceased him in 1983. Memorials may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 14 St. Michael's Alley, Charleston, SC 29401; the Historic Charleston Foundation, 40 East Bay Street, Charleston, SC 29401; or The Preservation Society of Charleston at 147 King Street in Charleston. Preston & Fraser:
We were saddened to learn of your Father's passing. Having known him has enriched our lives, as he was truly a gracious "southern" gentleman. The relationship w/ my grandfather, Dr. deSaussure, and mother, Margarette deS. Black, will always be in our hearts. May light perpetually shine on him. Our love to both of you and your families.

To Dr. Wilson's family;
My mother has been a resident of BG for 2 years and got to know Dr. Wilson well when she participated in the Friday "sings". She said she loved his smile!! I think he may have gone to Medical School with my father, L.D. Rhodes. My Mom and I send our deep sympathy to you and your family.

I lived next door to the Wilson's for several years, Dr. Wilson was a kind and gentle man, who always opened his home and yard for the kids in the neighborhood to play in. I spent many a spring and summer afternoon playing football with his son's Preston and Fraser. We made forts out of discarded Christmas trees in the weeks after Christmas.
Dr. Wilson will be missed by so many folks that he has touched over his life.

To Fraser, Jr. and Preston - My heart was broken this morning when I read this obit. You are truly in my thoughts and prayers. While working at BG I met Dr. Wilson and he was quite a "southern gentleman". A wonderful person who had the most infectious smile. I can still see him walking toward the dining room and Carleen stopping him to "dance". He will always remain in the hearts of Charlestonians who had the pleasure of knowing him. This world is a better place because he passed through. He is at peace with his Lord. Zoe thanks for being his friend, you could "always" make him smile. God Speed Doc.
