Frank Wooten Obituary

Frank McNair Wooten III Mt. Pleasant - Frank McNair Wooten III, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died on Saturday, August 12, 2019. Frank was born in Charlotte, NC on November 15, 1935, the son of Phyllis Carrison Wooten and Frank McNair Wooten, Jr. Growing up in Camden, SC, Frank attended Camden High School, where he served as the captain of the football team. After high school Frank played football for the University of Virginia and then transferred to The University of South Carolina where he was a member of the SAE fraternity, played on the golf team, and met his late wife Sarah Lawrence Norton Wooten (Sallie), whom he married on February 6, 1960. Frank served his country as a member of the United States Army before moving with his beloved bride to Miami, FL, where he was associated with Travelers Insurance. After the births of their daughters and five wonderful years in Florida, Frank and Sallie moved their family back home to the Carolinas when Frank joined Merrill Lynch in Charlotte, NC. He enjoyed a decades long career as a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, and his clients sought his advice long after his retirement. Upon retirement Frank and Sallie spent their time between Blowing Rock, NC and North Litchfield Beach, SC. Frank was an ordained Deacon of the Presbyterian Church, an avid fisherman, hunter, card player, and treasured his presumed position as "Mayor" of the Frankie Home in Mount Pleasant, SC. Always very social, he nevertheless stood by his custom of never having a cocktail after suppertime. Frank was considered the ultimate Southern gentleman and was an inspiration to the young men who came after him. Frank is survived by his daughters, Sallie Vee Wooten of Charleston, SC and Mary Beth Sherman (Jim) of Cary, NC. He is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Wooten Zervos (Hannah), McNair Zervos, Mikey Zervos, Baez Sherman and Curt Sherman. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and love to Frank's caregivers at the Franke Home. His Memorial Service will be held in The Rodenberg Chapel, Franke at Seaside at 3:00 PM Friday, August 16, 2019. Immediately following, the family will receive friends and family at the home of Sallie Vee Wooten. Frank will be laid to rest with Sallie in the Quaker Cemetery in Camden, SC. Online condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made in Frank and Sallie's memory to the Crossnore School and Children's Home in Crossnore, NC (PO Box 249, Crossnore, NC 28616-0249). Arrangements by JAMES A. Sallie Vee and Mary Beth my heart goes out to you and your families. Reading Franks obituary brought back so many wonderful Charlotte memories. As you know the two of you were the same age as my children. Two things that had really stuck in my mind were the time MB and Rhett painted a car of a lady visiting Sallie. Of course the paint belonged to Frank and he followed the trail that lead to that curly headed adorable little girl and her partner in crime. I think you were four. One more (even though I could keep going) was the walkie talkies that your dad hooked up from the Wooten play room to one of our bedrooms. The four of you kept them hot. I felt a deep lost when your wonderful mother died and your dads death brings the same sadness.
Love you both, Martha, Susan and Rhett

It's difficult to articulate the sense of loss I feel. Frank Wooten was a second father to me just as Sallie was my "other mother". I was welcomed into the Wooten family when I met them at North Litchfield as a 16 year-old local boy and have loved them ever since. Frank & Sallie were two of the nicest, generous and caring people that I've ever met. Sallie taught me the true meaning of southern hospitality and Frank taught me to salt water fish and how to be a proper southern gentleman. I have so many blissful memories of countless summer days spent at Litchfield Retreat with my surrogate family. Now at 57; I still remain in contact with Sallie Vee & Mary Beth. My heart and prayers are with you both as you work your way through this. I'll always remember Frank with a smile on his face and kind words for whomever he was conversing with. He will be terribly missed. God bless you Frank.

SallyVee and Marybeth,

i was sorry to see Franks obituary in the observer this morning but it allowed me to reflect on my very early experience in Charlotte. When i first came to visit Charlotte as a place to practice,I came armed with the name of Sally and Frank Wooten given to me by Lynn Irwin, a high school friend and a friend of your parents. I called your mom and dad from the motel on Scott avenue which no longer exists and got a fabulous 'welcome to Charlotte conversation which made me feel like Charlotte might be the right place for Linde and I to set up stakes. Upon coming to Charlotte your mom and dad became fast and supporting friends. Your mom was one of my best PR representatives. We loved the Latin school experience especially sitting with your dad at basketball games, both of us quite vocal. Your dad by this time was working for Merrill lynch and helped me start an investment account and gave me advice on saving for the future. As years passed your dad made a remarkable recovery from his stroke through hard work and determination. We loved reminiscing about old times' as we joined Blowing Rock ,played golf, partied, and celebrated. Your mom was remarkably enthusiastic ,funny and brave as she faced her cancer ,setting an example for us all. Only Sally would have her hair dresser and her plastic surgeon as pall bearers. We all loved BIG FRANK for his humor, his enthusiasm, and his tenacity. They were a fabulous pairlike George Burns and Gracie Allen- . We loved them like big brother and big sister.
You all have great genes and great personalities a gift from two really special parents .
