Frank Horsley Obituary

HORSLEY, Frank Frank McKenzie Horsley, 83, of Myrtle Beach, SC, passed away on February 27, 2008. He was born in Belmont, NC on February 8, 1925, son of the late Hurley Horsley and Laura Nolen. He was predeceased by his brother William Horsley. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Cooper Horsley, sons, Steven Horsley of Kiawah Island, SC, and Eric Horsley and wife Jennifer of Charlotte, NC, and daughters, Susan Beam and husband James of Wilmington, NC, Libby Riddle and husband David of Southport, NC, Sandra McElwaine of Ojai, CA, Robbie Carr and husband Kevin of Belmont, NC, and Kathy Rhyne and husband John of Belmont, NC. He is survived by 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Frank was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Shelby Carrier, in 1979. He was fortunate to have experienced two long and happy marriages full of much love. He cherished his extended family. Frank attended Duke University and The Citadel prior to serving in the Army during WWII. He then returned to The Citadel as a veteran student graduating with a degree in business. He returned to his hometown of Belmont and went to work in the family business, Stowe Mercantile Co., from which he eventually retired. Frank loved to be out of doors, particularly working with the animals, garden, and farm he maintained with his children and wife, Helen. Later he became an avid golfer, traveling and playing widely with his wife, Nancy. Over the years, his kindness and compassion toward his colleagues and neighbors earned him the respect and friendship of the Belmont and Mrytle Beach communities. Frank served the Belmont community in a variety of volunteer roles. He was a life-long member of First United Methodist Church of Belmont and served in many leadership positions there. He was a long time member of the Kiwanis and served several terms as local President. He was a member of the American Legion and was active in its baseball sponsorship program. He served the city of Belmont many years as Chairman of the Board of Zoning Adjustment. A gathering of friends will be held 2 to 4 pm Saturday, March 1, 2008 at GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, BEACH CHAPEL, MURRELLS INLET, SC. A memorial service will be held later in Belmont, NC. Just wanted you to know how much Frank meant to me during the time I worked for him at Stowe Merc. Not until I was older & more mature in my career, did I realize how my day at the store were so developed by his repore with customers, his mannerism and care with his employees and his love for his family. I truly believe that everyone who was in contact with him during his life was truly blessed!
