Floyd Harper Obituary

Floyd R. "Deekie" Harper, Jr. JAMES ISLAND - Floyd R. "Deekie" Harper, Jr., of James Island, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. It would be difficult to sum up the life of someone as unique, kind and charismatic as Floyd within the narrow confines of an obituary. Born in Charleston December 16, 1946 to Floyd R. Harper, Sr., SC Highway Patrolman, and Annie Royall Harper, schoolteacher, Floyd graduated from James Island High School in 1964 and Presbyterian College in 1968. He married his high school sweetheart, the late Jennifer Walker Weinstein of James Island in 1968. They had two children, Christopher and Rebecca. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1972. He graduated from MUSC College of Pharmacy in 1977. Floyd opened Bay Drugs in North Charleston and then Village Pharmacy in McClellanville. Floyd was an avid fan of classical music and was an accomplished pianist and organist. He attended PC on an organ scholarship and continued to play throughout his lifetime. A motorcycle enthusiast, Floyd rode his Harley until shortly before his death. He was a regular fixture at the West Ashley Group. Everyone who knew Floyd was deeply affected by his kindness, generous spirit, and unique perspective on life. He will be remembered for his wry sense of humor and magnetic personality. He is survived by his beloved children and grandchildren, including son, Christopher, and his wife, Jaci; daughter, Rebecca Gaines, and her husband, Tron; grandchildren, North, Raya, Saylor, Max and Caleb; and his sister, Anne Donohoe. A service will be held on Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 am at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming Street, Charleston, 20403. Burial of the ashes will follow at 12:30 at St. James Church, 1872 Camp Road, James Island, 29412. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, Attention: Volunteer Services c/o Community Living Center, 109 Bee St., Charleston, SC 29401. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

I first met Deekie at Palmetto Boys State before our Senior year in High school (I'm from Lake City SC) and met him again at PC. We, along with Tom Leonard, were roommates for 3 years and became good friends. I'm not sure anyone ever met Deek and didn't like him and vice versa. A good guy who was fun to be around. My wife, Laua, and I visited him a few months ago and enjoyed a time to remember those good days. We will miss him and will pray for his loved ones. James Powell

Deekie and I were classmates at JI Elementary and James Island High (Class of 1964). He was a wonderful guy! But as most classmates do, we lost touch. We reconnected thru Facebook and I looked forward to his insightful entries and photos. I followed his illness, and like all who knew him, I prayed for him. Now he is at peace with no pain and suffering. My sympathy to his family. He will be greatly missed.

I remember Deekie from childhood all the way through high school. We lost touch, as many of our classmates did, but reunited as Facebook friends a few years ago. I remember Deekie as a delightful, freckle-faced boy, who indeed was kind, gentlemanly, and just a good person. Please accept my condolences. I wish I could be at his service. May God's Holy Spirit fill and surround you with love and comfort.
