Evelyn Squires Obituary

Evelyn Joan Squires Mt. Pleasant - Evelyn Joan Walker Squires, 89, of Mount Pleasant, the widow of the late William Wallace Squires, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 16th, 2021. Relatives and friends of Evelyn Squires are invited to a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at LifeBridge Church, 2312 Rifle Range Road, in Mt. Pleasant. Burial will follow immediately in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens at 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on July 22, 1931, Evelyn was the daughter of Harold C. Walker and Evelyn Fourgerel Walker. She is survived by her immediate family, her treasured friends of more than 50 years, Joyce and Bobby Reed of Hopewell Junction, NY; Dan and Susie Raymond of Avon, CT; Tami Mazzarelli of Newburgh, NY. She is also survived by those she affectionately referred to as her extended family: Pastor Scott and Dorothy Hanson; John and Noreine Douglas and their daughter, Erin; Jerry and Beth Zink and their daughter, Emily, a bright shining star in Evelyn's life; Carolyn Houghland; David and Veronica Nielsen; Nancy Roettger and Robert (Bob) Carper; Louise and Edward Voelker; Lisa and Mel O'Keefe and their sons, Quinlan and Liam; Kim Roettger and Steve Young; Jeffrey and Erin Yurfest and their daughters, Josephine, Margo and Hart, all who refer to her as "Auntie Evelyn." Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Elizabeth Dittner; her husband, William (Bill) Squires; and her only child, David McGreavy. Evelyn worked for Union Carbide and First Brands in an Executive Assistant capacity for 32 years. She co-owned and operated a pub-style restaurant and also a health club with her husband, Bill, during that time. Upon moving to Charleston in 1995, she became the Office Manager for Nancy Roettger and Louise Voelker's real estate team. She later assisted the team of Lisa O'Keefe and Bill Roettger. Evelyn subsequently retired. In retirement, she worked proudly and enthusiastically as a volunteer in the Gift Shop at East Cooper Hospital for seven years, where she continued to share her many gifts including her love of people, her selfless ways and her desire to raise the spirits of those facing struggles. Evelyn's greatest joy came from serving the Lord, her church, her extended family and friends. Evelyn prayed daily, often for hours, on behalf of many, many people, including anyone she knew or learned of from a friend or family member, who would benefit from God's help. She was a member of LifeBridge Church, the Hat Ladies of Charleston, and the Keenagers. Donations may be made to LifeBridge Church, 2312 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Bobby & Joyce Reed

April 21, 2021

Today is the day we hoped would never come. Winnie the Pooh once said to Christopher Robin, if you live to be a 100, I want to live to be a 100 minus one day so I never have to live without you. Now we understand the philosophical wisdom of that meek, little bear. The thought of soldiering on without our beloved Evelyn by our side cast a long shadow over our collective futures. As we walk the paths of our lives, the memories of her will fill us with a warm glow. We will miss her; yes, we will miss her, just enough to let her go!
