I found this page by accident searching for a Drayton Hall memory. Mrs. Katuna was my 8th grade algebra teacher and I have never forgotten her. I have the fondest memories of her compassionate, patient stare as I struggled to engage with homework assignments. I recall my last Algebra exam and my own surprise at the fact I mastered the Pythagorean theorem, and most surprisingly, her unsurprised gaze at my 98% grade. I want her family to know that her memory walks with me every day in my career as a faculty generalist in a California community college. Her faith in my abilities, despite my then immaturity, galvanizes in my faith in the students we serve. Mrs. Katuna, I never told you how much you taught me about myself, especially in a time when I knew so little about how much that faith mattered.

Eve was my daughter's teacher, not only for science but for algebra. There were some moments when they didn't see eye to eye, but Rebecca still loved her. As a co-worker I greatly admired her enthusiasm and dedication to the job and her students. We need more teachers like her! We're praying for the family.

I am a teacher now and in a large part because of my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Katuna. She was one of the best. Thank you Mrs Katuna for making me eat your left-over lunch black olives after lunch one day. I thought I hated them but you made them taste wonderful. I will remember you always.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Mrs. Katuna was my 8th grade science teacher at Wallace 78-79. In the beginning she scared the daylights out of me. I soon came to love her and her sense of humor. She was a wonderful teacher that I have never forgotten. I have spoken of her to my own kids about the impact she made. It must run in the family because I know Dr. Katuna was a big influence on my sister becoming a Geology major at the CofC. I even had the honor to babysit for her many years ago. I am sorry to hear of her passing but she will never be forgotten.

I'll never forget the day Mrs. Katuna was circling the classroom, talking in an even cadence, passionately droning about geological formations, teaching science; as she passed my desk she reached into the cabinet next to it. She pulled out a copy of Isaac Asimov's Foundation and Empire, and showed it to me, smiling a little. Then she put it back and closed the cabinet door, never stopping her lesson, moving on.

I was reading the same book for the first time; she saw it under my desk, and she took a moment to show me that we were connected in a small and yet very human way.

Here, for probably the first time, was a teacher- an ultimate authoritarian by virtue of both her position and her intellect- showing me for a flash that wonder at what might be knows no bounds of age or class, and that despite my omnipresent awkwardness and youthful inadequacies, I was following a well-lit and sturdy path on which everything might turn out all right.

She treasured something I treasured, and showed me. At thirteen, this was the best kind of lesson. Thank you, Mrs. Katuna. You were one of the best of us.

Mrs. Katuna and I had a very rocky start to my eight grade year. I was not one of her favorite students. By then end of the year, our opinions of each other had completely changed! To this day, one of my favorite stories from middle school involves Mrs. Katuna and I tell it often. I'm sorry for your loss. She will be missed by many!

I am so sorry to read of Eve's passing. We were both science teachers for CCSD and I was fortunate to attend many courses and presentations with her. Eve was always fun to work beside and I SO appreciated her insightful ideas for reaching students. Please know she will be remembered by both friends and former students fondly.
