Evelyn Gooding Obituary

Evelyn Grooms Gooding Hanahan - Evelyn Grooms Gooding, 99, of Hanahan, SC, widow of L. Roscoe Gooding, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2022 at her home with her loving family by her side. Her graveside service will be held Friday, March 18, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel. Evelyn was born September 13, 1922 in Cross, SC, daughter of the late Alvoid Nathan Grooms and Lena Singletary Grooms. Evelyn graduated from Cross High School as Valedictorian and went on to study at Charleston Beauty College, Charleston, SC, where she earned her cosmetology license. She was a cosmetologist for over 55 years and owner of Evelyn's Beauty Shop in North Charleston. Evelyn was a dedicated, faithful member of First Baptist Church of North Charleston for over 70 years. She served in many capacities over the years, such as WMU Director, Sunday School teacher and chairman of the Decorations & Furnishings Committee, to name only a few. Unfortunately, in 2021, at age 99, her beloved First Baptist church had to close due to declining membership. After much thought and prayer, she made the decision to join the church she grew up in, Sandridge Baptist Church. God, church and family were the center of her life. A good friend recently described Evelyn perfectly: "She has always been a true Southern Lady; beautiful, graceful, soft spoken, kind, caring and dedicated to her Lord and family." She was an avid gardener, a talented seamstress and wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Berry Grooms, and son-in-law, Frank Turner. She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Gooding Turner of Hanahan, SC and son, G. Rhett Gooding & wife, Linda of Ridgeville, SC; grandson, J. Dale Lovingood & wife, Bessie of Orangeburg, SC; granddaughter, Iris Lewis & husband, Bryan of Moncks Corner, SC; two much-loved great-grandchildren, Owen Lovingood and Ayden Lewis; and several very close nieces and nephews. Flowers will be accepted or memorials to Sandridge Baptist Church, 4677 State Rd., Ridgeville, SC 29472. Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

She was the kindest women that I had ever met. She put up with me as a child running wild all over her beauty shop and never once got mad at me. Prayers to all that knew her and to know her was to love her.
